47-year-old man dies following Tuesday morning attack; improvised weapon recovered
FOLSOM — California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials are investigating the death of an inmate at California State Prison, Sacramento in as a homicide following an attack Tuesday morning. The incident marks the second homicide at the Folsom facility in a week.
At approximately 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, staff at the Folsom prison saw incarcerated person Julio Caesar Madrigal, 36, striking Danny Aguilar, 47, according to CDCR.
Staff ordered all incarcerated people in the area to get down. Madrigal allegedly failed to comply, prompting custody staff to fire two less-lethal rounds to stop the attack.
Staff immediately began life-saving measures on Aguilar while transferring him to the prison’s triage and treatment area. Officers also called 911. Aguilar was pronounced dead by a physician at approximately 10 a.m.
No staff members were injured during the incident.
Madrigal was restrained and placed in restricted housing pending an investigation by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
According to CDCR, an improvised weapon was recovered at the scene. Facility C was placed on modified programming following the incident, and the Office of the Inspector General was notified.
Aguilar was received into CDCR custody from Los Angeles County on Oct. 26, 2006. He was serving a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
Madrigal was most recently received into CDCR custody from Tulare County on June 9, 2022. He is serving a sentence of life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, a second-strike offense.
California State Prison, Sacramento opened in 1986 and houses more than 2,200 medium-, maximum- and high-security incarcerated people. The prison offers academic classes and vocational programs and employs approximately 1,500 people.
The investigation into Aguilar’s death remains ongoing.
