June marks National Men’s Health Month, a time to take action and prioritize your well-being. According to the CDC, 41% of men are more likely to die prematurely compared to women — mostly due to a tendency to delay screenings, engage in risky behaviors and have higher rates of preventable conditions, such as heart disease.

Here are seven tips men can take to get started on a healthful journey:

Get regular exercise: aim for 150 minutes of exercise per week. It is best to mix it up, alternating between two days of cardio, three days of strength training, an active rest day and a day of recovery.

“Strength training is especially important for men as they age because it preserves muscle mass, improves balance and increases metabolism,” said Certified Personal Trainer Terra Edwards, Health and Wellness Director, Broadstone Sports Club, a Spare Time Sports Club.

Make space for a recovery day: Recovery day doesn’t mean you’re being lazy or giving up on your goals. Quite the opposite, said Edwards.

“It’s important to have a recovery day where you enjoy assisted stretching, yoga, massage, an ice bath or a cold plunge, or anything that helps muscles relax, lengthen and repair.”

She added that these activities strengthen the muscles, which leads to better flexibility and eases pain in day-to-day life.

Create a balancing act: Stabilization training is something everyone should do, yet many people skip it, said Edwards. She emphasizes the importance of regular balancing exercises such as standing on one foot or doing single leg calf raises to help with standing up, getting out of the chair, walking and other regular activities.

Three keys to aging gracefully: Regular exercise, proper nutrition and quality sleep will help you age gracefully, noted Edwards.

“A lot of 50-year-old men are not getting eight hours of sleep, which leads to a slower metabolism and higher level of stress. Muscles need eight hours in order to be fully functional the next day.”

The buddy system for mental health: Every time you move your body, it’s good for mental health. Having a personal trainer or someone to work out with allows that space where you can listen or vent. You’ll leave feeling better than when you started your workout.

Don’t be shy: Try something new. Many men shy away from group exercise, but it is a great workout in a short amount of time, said Edwards, explaining members experience a more enjoyable workout because they feel the energy from others in the room.

Drink up: A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces per day. While this may seem daunting, Edwards recommends investing in a water bottle that fits your needs. One suggestion is a water bottle that marks how much water you should drink per hour.

It’s not easy, Edwards understands. She encourages men to continue exercising as you age, and if you’ve never exercised, get started today.

“It’s never too late to start. It doesn’t matter what your lifestyle or diet is. It’s all about balance. Start small and give yourself a goal.”
