Halfway Inn and a three-band tribute to Green Day, Stone Temple Pilots and No Doubt launch Friday before Tijuana Weekend, Patton Leatha and a full day of local music carry the weekend through Sunday
From the arena-sized rock songs of decades past to a Friday night devoted to the alternative sounds of the 1990s, followed by Motown, R&B and an entire Sunday showcasing Sacramento-area musicians, Powerhouse Pub has a particularly varied weekend of live entertainment ahead in Historic Folsom.
The music begins Friday, Aug. 21, with Halfway Inn bringing its catalog of rock favorites to the TGIF Early Show. Later that night, Powerhouse turns back the clock for 90’s Rewind, a three-band showcase celebrating Green Day, Stone Temple Pilots and No Doubt.
Saturday starts with Tijuana Weekend during the afternoon before longtime performer Duane Patton and the Patton Leatha Band take over at night with a career and repertoire stretching from Motown and old-school R&B to contemporary Top 40.
Then Sunday becomes a celebration of the local music community as SL@MJAM marks the one-year anniversary of its Sacramento-Area Local Musicians Jam series with seven bands performing across seven hours.
Friday’s lineup gets underway at 6:30 p.m. when Halfway Inn takes the stage for the TGIF Early Show.
The group bills itself as the “ALL INN” band, with a repertoire built around the music of epic rock bands from across the decades. The concept is straightforward: recognizable rock songs, big hooks and familiar choruses delivered as a party-oriented opening to the weekend.
The show gives audiences an early start on Sutter Street before the musical calendar makes a sharp turn toward one particular decade later Friday night.
At 10 p.m., Powerhouse becomes a time machine to the 1990s with 90’s Rewind, featuring three tribute acts performing back-to-back.
Rather than focusing on one artist, 90’s Rewind revisits three distinctive sounds that helped define rock radio during the decade.
Green for a Day takes on the music of Green Day, whose fast-moving punk-influenced rock became one of the defining sounds of the decade. Conversations Kill turns to the heavier side of ’90s alternative rock with a tribute to Stone Temple Pilots, while Rocksteady celebrates No Doubt and the band’s combination of ska, alternative rock and pop.
Together, the three acts give Friday night a tour through several corners of the decade’s music, from punk-driven rock to the heavier alternative sound and ska-pop that became fixtures of the era.
For those whose musical memories include alternative radio, MTV and the explosion of bands that reshaped mainstream rock during the 1990s, Friday’s late show puts three of those familiar catalogs under one roof.
Saturday, Aug. 22, starts at 3 p.m. with Tijuana Weekend taking over the Saturday Afternoon Dance Party.
The five-piece group specializes in high-energy dance, rock and party covers, setting up the afternoon portion of Saturday’s entertainment with three hours of live music through 6 p.m.
Saturday night then turns toward Motown, R&B and old-school favorites when the Patton Leatha Band takes the stage at 10 p.m.
Led by Duane Patton, the group works from a wide musical range. A Patton Leatha performance can move from Motown-era favorites and R&B to funk, slow jams, old-school selections and current Top 40 music.
Behind that versatility is Patton’s lengthy career in the music business, one that began when he was still a child.
At age 11, Patton was signed to CBS Records as a member of the Bay Area group The Together Band. During that period, he was invited to perform at a CBS Convention Showcase alongside recording artists that included Earth, Wind & Fire, Barbra Streisand and Journey.
His time with CBS also connected him to Henry Cosby, the Motown songwriter and producer whose credits included work with Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. Cosby produced Patton during his years with the label.
Patton later signed with Holland-Dozier-Holland’s HDH Records as an artist, songwriter and producer, adding another direct connection to the history of Motown. The legendary songwriting and production team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland was responsible for an extensive catalog of hits during Motown’s classic era.
Another chapter of Patton’s career placed his voice on a very different style of recording. He was among the vocalists on Too Short’s “The Ghetto,” from the rapper’s platinum-selling album “Short Dog’s in the House.”
Today, Patton continues performing with the Patton Leatha Band, which has appeared at casinos and entertainment venues including MGM Grand, Caesars Palace, Bellagio, Peppermill, Eldorado, Graton, Red Hawk, Cache Creek and Thunder Valley.
That experience comes to Powerhouse Saturday night in a show that can move across several generations of popular music over the course of the evening.
Sunday, Aug. 23, changes the format entirely.
Instead of a single Powerhouse of Blues headliner, Sunday becomes a seven-hour showcase of Sacramento-area talent as SL@MJAM celebrates the one-year anniversary of its Local Musicians Jam series.
The free event runs from 3 to 10 p.m. and features seven local bands, with a different group scheduled to take the stage each hour.
Precious Metal opens the anniversary celebration at 3 p.m., followed by Judy and the Replicators at 4 p.m. Unknown Band performs at 5 p.m., with One Step Down following at 6 p.m.
Rough Cut takes over at 7 p.m., The Cool Down performs at 8 p.m., and Quick and Easy closes the anniversary lineup beginning at 9 p.m.
The event marks one year of the Sacramento-Area Local Musicians Jam at Powerhouse, a series created around bringing regional musicians together and giving local performers additional opportunities to take the stage.
Sunday’s anniversary expands that concept into an afternoon and evening devoted entirely to area bands, with seven acts representing the local music community in a single day.
It also makes this weekend one of the broader Powerhouse lineups of the summer. Friday moves from decades of classic rock into three distinct corners of the 1990s. Saturday shifts from afternoon dance and rock favorites to a veteran performer whose career touches Motown, R&B, funk and hip-hop. Sunday turns the stage over to seven Sacramento-area bands for the anniversary of a series centered on local musicians.
Powerhouse Pub is located at 614 Sutter St. in Historic Folsom. Halfway Inn performs Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by 90’s Rewind featuring Green for a Day, Conversations Kill and Rocksteady at 10 p.m. Tijuana Weekend performs Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m., followed by the Patton Leatha Band at 10 p.m. Sunday’s free SL@MJAM one-year anniversary runs from 3 to 10 p.m.
