“American Legend” launches summer-long celebration of roots music, storytelling and American heritage at Zittel Family Amphitheater
A decade after it first took the stage in Folsom, a beloved tribute to one of America’s most influential musical icons will return this weekend to launch a summer-long celebration of roots music, storytelling and American heritage in Historic Folsom.
The Wildwood Performing Arts Foundation’s Folsom Americana Fest begins Saturday, June 13, at the Zittel Family Amphitheater with “American Legend: A Tribute to Johnny Cash’s Life in Song,” the first of three featured productions that make up the festival’s inaugural summer season.
The performance marks the 10th anniversary of American Legend, a production that debuted in Folsom in 2016 as a benefit concert supporting the City of Folsom’s Johnny Cash Art Trail. Since then, the show has become one of the foundation’s signature productions, bringing audiences on a musical journey through the life and legacy of the legendary “Man in Black.”
Saturday’s performance begins at 7 p.m. and features an extensive lineup of performers, including Kevin Marcy, Sunny Mitchell, Anthony Caserta, Tom Proulx, Geoffrey Miller, Lizzy Malekos, Bella Lazaro, Karissa Carleton, Marshall Goins and JJ Flores, along with eight young artists from the Wildwood Performing Arts Foundation.
Rather than serving as a traditional tribute concert, American Legend explores the musical influences that shaped Cash’s life and career. The production traces the roots of his sound through the country artists who inspired him, including the Carter Family, before taking audiences through the iconic Sun Records era of the 1950s and 1960s with hits such as “I Walk the Line” and “Get Rhythm.”
The show also examines Cash’s later career renaissance through songs from his groundbreaking American Recordings albums, offering audiences a comprehensive look at the artist’s evolution and enduring impact on American music.
Multi-talented performers combine music, movement and storytelling throughout the production, sharing Cash’s story through a theatrical experience that celebrates not only the songs he made famous but also the cultural influence he continues to have decades after his death.
The opening performance serves as the kickoff event for Folsom Americana Fest, a new summer-long concert series created by the Wildwood Performing Arts Foundation to celebrate the traditions of Americana, roots country, bluegrass, folk and rockabilly music.
Held on select Saturdays throughout June, July and August in Historic Folsom, the festival will feature musicians and performers from California and across the United States while highlighting the music, stories and traditions that have helped shape generations of American life.
In addition to American Legend, the festival lineup includes “Sweethearts & Storytellers,” a showcase of trailblazing music hosted by The Wildwood Roses, and “Honky Tonk Highways,” a celebration of California’s deep country music roots.
The festival arrives as communities across the nation begin commemorating America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Organizers say the series is intended to honor the music, storytelling and cultural traditions that continue to connect communities while celebrating the uniquely American art forms that emerged from those traditions.
Audiences attending the series can expect family-friendly outdoor performances featuring live music, storytelling and theatrical elements designed to bring history and heritage to life through the performing arts.
“As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Folsom Americana Fest is a meaningful way to celebrate the music, storytelling, and traditions that continue to shape our culture,” said Sunny Mitchell, founding director of the Wildwood Performing Arts Foundation. “There’s something incredibly special about bringing people together through live music in the heart of Historic Folsom.”
Proceeds from Folsom Americana Fest support the Wildwood Performing Arts Foundation’s workshops, concerts and educational programming. The Folsom-based nonprofit uses the performing arts as a vehicle for education, with a mission centered on exploring and preserving the rich tapestry of American heritage through music and live performance.
