First phase of planning for larger facility designed to support city services, emergency response and future growth approved
The Folsom City Council has approved the first phase of planning for a future Corporation Yard, launching a long-range effort to replace a facility that has served as the city’s operational backbone for more than six decades.
At its most recent regular meeting, the council approved an agreement with Griffin Structures, Inc. to begin site planning and environmental assessment work for a proposed new Corporation Yard located south of Highway 50.
While largely unseen by residents, the Corporation Yard plays a critical role in the delivery of city services. The current facility on Leidesdorff Street was built in the 1960s and houses key street maintenance and operations divisions, solid waste services, fleet services and portions of the utilities department. The 14-acre site also serves as a primary location for equipment and operations during emergency response situations.
As Folsom continues to add new neighborhoods, businesses and infrastructure, city leaders are looking ahead to ensure municipal operations have the space and resources needed to meet future demands. The planning effort is intended to identify how a modern Corporation Yard can best support city services through 2050 and beyond.
The future Corporation Yard is planned for a 36-acre site south of the Capital Southeast Connector and bordered to the south and west by the newly aligned Scott Road. The larger site will provide an opportunity to evaluate future operational needs and develop a facility capable of supporting the city’s continued growth.
According to city information, planning efforts will focus on long-term service needs, operational efficiency, sustainability, workplace safety and emergency readiness. The goal is to create a modern operations hub that will support the delivery of high-quality public services for decades to come.
The agreement with Griffin Structures includes staffing and space projections through 2050, utility coordination, a site survey, conceptual site alternatives, cost comparisons, environmental documentation and grant funding support.
The work will help city officials determine future facility requirements, evaluate development options and identify the most effective approach for designing and constructing a new Corporation Yard. Environmental review conducted as part of the process will also help assess site conditions and potential impacts before any future development moves forward.
While construction remains years away, city officials view the planning effort as an important step in preparing for Folsom’s future. The project is designed to ensure that the departments responsible for maintaining streets, managing city vehicles, supporting utilities operations, handling solid waste services and responding to emergencies have the infrastructure needed to continue serving a growing community.
The approved agreement marks the beginning of what city leaders describe as a thoughtful, long-range process to develop a future Corporation Yard capable of supporting essential city services and emergency operations for generations to come.
