Power Play brings seven decades of party music Saturday before theater takes center stage with trivia, karaoke and a fundraiser Sunday

One night is built for the dance floor. The next is for those who know their Sondheim from their Webber — and aren’t afraid to prove it before grabbing the microphone themselves.

The Boardwalk is mixing things up this weekend with two very different events at the longtime Orangevale entertainment venue. Sacramento dance party band Power Play takes over Saturday night with a songbook stretching across seven decades, while Sunday afternoon turns toward the stage as the Women’s Theatre Collective and Valkyrie Theatre Company host their second annual Boardwalk fundraiser featuring Broadway team trivia, a dessert auction, prizes and karaoke.

It makes for a weekend that moves from rock, pop, hip-hop and country Saturday night to show tunes, theater knowledge and audience participation Sunday afternoon.

Saturday night belongs to Power Play, a Sacramento-based dance party band that has built its reputation on versatility and an unusually broad catalog.

Rather than staying in one musical lane, Power Play covers popular dance songs from across seven decades and nearly every corner of the party-band spectrum. Rock, pop, hip-hop, old-school R&B, country and throwback favorites all have a place in a set designed with one goal in mind — keeping the dance floor moving.

The band features multiple lead vocalists, allowing it to move between genres and eras throughout the night without being tied to a single style or sound. A Power Play set can jump from Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa to Eminem, ABBA, Guns N’ Roses and Blink-182, making Saturday’s show less of a traditional concert and more of a live soundtrack for a party.

That wide-ranging approach has made the Sacramento group a familiar presence at weddings, corporate events, casinos and other Northern California stages, with performances extending throughout Sacramento, the Bay Area, Lake Tahoe and beyond.

Saturday’s Boardwalk appearance comes with an added celebration. Billed as “Power Play — Missy’s 50 Bday Bash,” the evening combines the band’s high-energy show with a milestone birthday party that is open to the public.

Doors open at 7 p.m., with Power Play taking the stage at 8 p.m. Advance admission is listed at $15 with the promotional code PARTY, while day-of-show admission is $20.

Broadway knowledge takes over Sunday

After Saturday night’s dance party, The Boardwalk changes gears Sunday afternoon as the Women’s Theatre Collective and Valkyrie Theatre Company return for their second annual fundraiser at the venue.

This time, knowing your Broadway history could pay off.

Broadway Team Trivia anchors the afternoon, inviting teams to test their knowledge of songs, shows, characters, composers, Broadway history and some of the more obscure details serious theater fans tend to collect along the way.

Organizers are encouraging friends to form teams, put their musical theater knowledge together and compete for prizes and bragging rights.

The event isn’t limited to trivia. A dessert auction will give attendees a chance to bid on sweet treats while raising additional money for the organizations, and once the trivia competition concludes, the stage opens for karaoke.

The karaoke portion is open to everyone, whether participants want to tackle a Broadway classic, switch genres with a favorite pop song or simply watch and cheer on those willing to take the microphone.

The combination gives Sunday’s fundraiser a distinctly interactive feel. Rather than simply watching a performance, guests become part of the entertainment — answering questions, bidding in the auction and potentially ending up on The Boardwalk stage themselves.

Behind Sunday’s fun is a larger purpose, with proceeds supporting the Women’s Theatre Collective and Valkyrie Theatre Company and their efforts to create opportunities for artists and bring live theater to the community.

Women’s Theatre Collective is a nonprofit organization centered on producing entertainment that promotes strong female identities while creating opportunities for female artists. The organization also partners with other groups supporting women and donates a portion of profits from its productions to nonprofits assisting women in need.

Valkyrie Theatre Company focuses on theatrical performance and education, producing community shows while also providing educational programming for young people. Its work includes school productions, workshops and partnerships with elementary, middle and high schools throughout the Sacramento area.

The company’s educational programs use theater to develop performance skills and confidence while giving students experience in the production process. Valkyrie also operates a directing mentorship program and works to create inclusive opportunities for artists and students.

Sunday’s Boardwalk fundraiser helps support that work while putting the organizations’ theatrical personality front and center. Doors open at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the fundraiser beginning at 3 p.m.

The weekend illustrates the variety that has long been part of The Boardwalk’s identity. Saturday is all about turning up the volume and filling the dance floor as Power Play moves through decades of recognizable music. By Sunday afternoon, the guitars and dance hits give way to Broadway questions, desserts and anyone brave enough to step up for karaoke.

Power Play — Missy’s 50 Bday Bash takes place Saturday, Oct. 3, at The Boardwalk, 9426 Greenback Lane in Orangevale. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

The Women’s Theatre Collective/Valkyrie Theatre Company fundraiser follows Sunday, Oct. 4. Doors open at 2 p.m., with activities beginning at 3 p.m.

Tickets and additional information for the weekend’s events are available through The Boardwalk.
