Historic Folsom production adds multiple April performances as audiences continue to fill seats
FOLSOM — The train isn’t pulling into its final station just yet.
After weeks of strong attendance and enthusiastic audience response, Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” at Sutter Street Theatre has officially been extended into late April, giving theatergoers additional opportunities to experience the classic mystery live on stage in Historic Folsom.
What was originally scheduled to conclude in March will now continue with added performances on Friday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m., Friday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 26 at 4:30 p.m.
The extension marks a notable milestone for the local production and underscores the enduring draw of both Agatha Christie’s storytelling and Sutter Street Theatre’s ability to bring literary classics to life in an intimate setting.
First published in 1934, “Murder on the Orient Express” remains one of Christie’s most celebrated novels and a defining entry in her Hercule Poirot series. Christie, often referred to as the “Queen of Mystery,” authored more than 60 detective novels and became one of the best-selling writers in literary history. Her works have captivated generations of readers, and “Murder on the Orient Express” stands among her most famous achievements.
The story unfolds aboard the luxurious Orient Express during the golden age of European rail travel — an era synonymous with elegance, intrigue and international sophistication. Just after midnight, a snowdrift halts the train in its tracks. Though it is an unusual time of year for heavy travel, the train is surprisingly full. By morning, one passenger is dead.
An American tycoon is discovered in his locked compartment, stabbed eight times. With the train isolated from the outside world and a killer believed to be among the passengers, the meticulous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot must untangle a web of secrets before the murderer has a chance to strike again. The confined setting, layered suspects and morally complex resolution have made the story a cornerstone of modern mystery storytelling, inspiring multiple film, television and stage adaptations across decades.

At Sutter Street Theatre, the production is brought to life through Ken Ludwig’s acclaimed stage adaptation, which preserves Christie’s intricate plotting while shaping the story for live performance with crisp pacing and theatrical intensity.
Directed by Connie Mockenhaupt, the Historic Folsom staging makes full use of the theater’s intimate layout, heightening the sense of confinement aboard the stalled train and drawing audiences directly into the suspense. The proximity between performers and audience amplifies the tension, allowing each glance, accusation and revelation to resonate with immediacy.
Located at 717 Sutter St., Sutter Street Theatre has become a cultural anchor in Historic Folsom, known for presenting classic works, beloved stories and character-driven productions that connect strongly with local audiences. The extension of “Murder on the Orient Express” reflects not only the timeless strength of Christie’s work, but also the community’s continued support of live theater.
The production is rated PG and includes references to kidnapping and murder, along with gunshot sound effects.
With added April dates now on the schedule, audiences who missed earlier performances — or those eager to revisit Poirot’s most famous case — have a limited window to catch this extended run before it finally concludes.
