Detectives with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a suspect tied to a widespread organized retail theft operation that targeted major home improvement retailers and funneled stolen merchandise through local pawn shops, authorities said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the investigation spanned from December 2025 through April 2026 and uncovered a pattern of thefts involving multiple Home Depot and Lowe’s locations across Sacramento County and neighboring areas. Detectives linked approximately 50 separate thefts to a single suspect, with total losses exceeding $20,000.
Investigators with the agency’s Organized Retail Crime Unit determined the suspect primarily targeted high-value power tools, which were then quickly sold for cash at area pawn shops. Businesses identified in the investigation include North City Pawn, Action Loan & Pawn and Gold-n-Pawn.
Through surveillance operations, search warrants and follow-up investigative work, detectives identified the suspect as 35-year-old Anthony Vargas. Authorities said Vargas allegedly followed a consistent daily routine, stealing merchandise in the morning hours before traveling between pawn shops to sell brand-new, boxed items.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly showed pawn shop employees examining repeated, identical items brought in by Vargas before completing transactions. Search warrants executed at multiple pawn locations led to the recovery of more than $10,000 in stolen merchandise and suggested the scope of the theft operation may extend beyond initial estimates.
Vargas was arrested on multiple felony counts, including grand theft and organized retail theft, and initially held on $100,000 bail. On April 15, 2026, he was released on his own recognizance with pre-trial probation conditions that included staying away from all Home Depot and Lowe’s stores in Sacramento County.
Authorities said that within hours of his release, Vargas allegedly returned to theft activity, taking a $650 DeWalt table saw from another Home Depot location and selling it to a different pawn shop. Detectives quickly located him in South Sacramento, arrested him again and recovered the stolen item.
Following the second arrest, a judge approved a bail enhancement, raising the amount to $250,000. Vargas was also booked on additional charges including driving on a suspended license, and his vehicle was impounded. Sacramento County Jail records as of Wednesday show Vargas remains in custody under a no-bail hold and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
According to investigators, Vargas has a prior criminal history that includes theft-related offenses, firearms violations, possession of a firearm by a felon, narcotics offenses and DUI.
The investigation remains ongoing, and detectives believe additional pawn shops may be involved. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office at (916) 874-5115.
