RANCHO CORDOVA — A driver was killed Monday night after a vehicle overturned and caught fire on Hazel Avenue near the American River, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. on the Hazel Avenue bridge over the American River. CHP’s East Sacramento office reported that the vehicle overturned and became fully engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside.
Responding CHP officers attempted to reach and rescue the driver, but the intensity of the fire prevented them from doing so. The driver died at the scene as a result of the crash.
Investigators said witnesses reported that speed may have been a factor in the collision. Authorities had not determined whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash as of Tuesday morning.
The collision prompted the closure of all southbound lanes of Hazel Avenue while emergency personnel worked at the scene and CHP investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The identity of the driver had not been released pending notification of family.
