FOLSOM — A suspected DUI driver traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph caused a violent three-vehicle crash Wednesday night on eastbound Highway 50 near Prairie City Road, according to the California Highway Patrol’s East Sacramento division.
Authorities said speed and suspected alcohol impairment are being investigated as primary factors in the crash, which unfolded within moments of a reckless driving report around 8:18 p.m. involving a red Honda traveling at extreme speeds along the Highway 50 corridor through Sacramento.
Less than 90 seconds after that initial call—before officers were able to locate the vehicle—the driver triggered a chain-reaction collision near the Prairie City Road interchange in Folsom.
According to CHP, the Honda first sideswiped a black Land Rover, then continued forward and crashed into a white Toyota Corolla. The impact caused significant damage to the Corolla, including snapping off its left rear wheel and breaking the rear axle. The red Honda sustained major front-end damage in the crash.
An off-duty Cal Fire officer was first to arrive on scene and immediately began providing medical assistance until additional emergency personnel arrived. First responders worked to assess injuries, secure the crash site and manage traffic along the busy corridor.
The driver of the red Honda, described as a man, was the only person reported to have sustained serious injuries and was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. Occupants of the other vehicles were evaluated at the scene, and no other major injuries were reported.
The crash temporarily impacted traffic on eastbound Highway 50 west of Prairie City Road as crews cleared the wreckage and conducted an initial investigation. All lanes were later reopened.
The incident remains under investigation, including the suspected role of alcohol and the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
