ORANGEVALE — An e-scooter charging system is being investigated as the possible cause of a Sunday night fire that heavily damaged the garage of an Orangevale home, where two residents escaped safely after being alerted to the flames by a neighbor.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were dispatched to the structure fire at approximately 9:36 p.m. Sunday in the 9200 block of Rock Canyon Way in Orangevale.
According to incident information reported through PulsePoint, the fire response was centered at 9262 Rock Canyon Way and drew numerous Metro Fire resources, including engines, trucks, medic units and battalion chiefs.
The fire began in the garage of the single-family home while two adults were inside the residence, according to Metro Fire.
Officials said a neighbor heard what was described as a “pop” before seeing fire in the garage. The neighbor alerted the residents, who were able to escape from the home without injury.
Firefighters responded to the scene and worked to contain the fire, which caused heavy damage to the garage.
The exact cause remained under investigation Monday morning. However, fire officials said an e-scooter charging system is believed to be a possible source of the blaze. A final determination on the cause has not yet been announced.
The incident comes amid continued concerns surrounding lithium-ion batteries used to power e-scooters, e-bikes and other rechargeable devices. When damaged, defective or improperly charged, lithium-ion batteries can overheat and potentially ignite.
Fire officials routinely recommend using only charging equipment designed and approved for a particular device, avoiding damaged batteries or chargers and keeping charging devices away from exits and combustible materials.
No injuries were reported in Sunday night’s fire. Additional information regarding the extent of damage to the remainder of the residence was not immediately available.
