Fast-moving blaze prompted second-alarm response as 48 firefighters from three agencies protected neighboring homes and contained flames in just over an hour.
A fast-moving, multi-structure fire damaged two homes in Folsom’s Lexington Hills neighborhood early Wednesday, prompting a second-alarm response that brought together 48 firefighters from three regional fire agencies.
According to the Folsom Fire Department, the Sacramento Regional Fire Emergency Communications Center dispatched crews to the area of Dunstable Way and Wellfleet Circle at approximately 1:10 a.m. after reports of a structure fire. Arriving firefighters encountered heavy flames involving multiple outbuildings, with the fire rapidly spreading to two nearby homes.
As firefighters approached the neighborhood, heavy flames could be seen from a distance before crews arrived to find the incident well involved.
The fire originated in the area between the two homes, where multiple outbuildings became engulfed before flames spread to the residences, according to preliminary observations by firefighters and witness statements. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
With two structures burning, incident commanders upgraded the response to a second alarm, bringing additional personnel and equipment to the scene. The response ultimately included more than 20 emergency units, including multiple fire engines, three ladder trucks — one from each responding agency — two medic units, several battalion chiefs and command officers, along with members of the Folsom Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Firefighters from the El Dorado Hills Fire Department and the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District assisted Folsom crews under the region’s mutual and automatic aid system.
Firefighters mounted an aggressive attack on the blaze while simultaneously conducting structure protection operations to keep the fire from spreading to additional homes throughout the neighborhood.
“This was a fast-moving, multi-structure fire that required a coordinated response from our firefighters and our regional partners,” Battalion Chief W. Nick Lawlor said. “Their efforts not only brought the fire under control but prevented it from spreading farther into the neighborhood.”
The fire proved especially challenging as crews encountered multiple separate attic spaces containing stored items, making it difficult to access hidden fire. It took approximately 45 minutes before firefighters were able to begin reaching and extinguishing flames burning within the attic spaces.
Despite those challenges, firefighters contained the first structure fire at 2:03 a.m. and the second at 2:13 a.m.
While one home sustained extensive damage, firefighters were able to limit damage to the second home to its exterior and attic, preserving the personal belongings and contents inside, according to the fire department.
Folsom CERT volunteers also responded to the scene, providing support to the large number of firefighters working the incident while assisting displaced residents during the lengthy overnight emergency operation. The Folsom Police Department also assisted with evacuations, traffic control and scene security.
According to the fire department, all residents safely evacuated before firefighters arrived. No civilian injuries or fatalities were reported.
One Folsom firefighter sustained a minor injury while battling the blaze and was transported to Mercy Hospital of Folsom for treatment and evaluation. The firefighter was later released.
The homeowner also reported a missing pet cat. Firefighters searched the property, but the animal had not been located as of Wednesday.
The primary residence sustained extensive damage and is completely uninhabitable, while the neighboring home suffered damage to its exterior and attic after the fire spread. Following the knockdown of the fire, crews remained on scene throughout the early morning hours conducting salvage and overhaul operations, extinguishing remaining hot spots and assisting fire investigators.
Arson investigators are conducting an active investigation into the origin of the fire. The cause remains undetermined.

Fire officials had not released the cause of the fire as of Wednesday morning as the process remained active.
