Craft coffee shop pairs a community gathering place with a mission reaching refugee families in Uganda
EL DORADO HILLS — A new destination for coffee, food and community is brewing in El Dorado Hills, and later this month Proxy Coffee will officially celebrate its arrival with a grand opening that highlights both its local offerings and a mission reaching far beyond the region.
Proxy Coffee will celebrate its official grand opening Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 931 Lassen Lane. The community celebration will feature coffee, food, music, giveaways and activities as the locally based business introduces more residents to the concept behind the shop.
At the center of Proxy Coffee is a relatively simple idea: take something millions of people already make part of their daily routine and use it as a way to make an impact elsewhere.
The result is a coffee shop designed to serve as a gathering place in El Dorado Hills while helping support humanitarian efforts overseas.
Through Proxy Coffee International, the business partners with trusted leaders serving refugee communities in Uganda, with a particular focus on vulnerable children and child-headed families who have lost their parents. Those partnerships help provide food, shelter, clothing, education, health care and other basic needs.
It is a model Proxy sums up with the phrase, “Coffee here. Impact there.”
“The heart behind Proxy has always been to meet two needs at once,” said Heather Hodson, operations manager. “We want this to be a place people genuinely love being, a place for high end craft coffee, food and community. But we also want everything we build here to create an opportunity to be radically generous somewhere else.”
The Sept. 26 celebration will offer visitors a chance to experience the shop, learn more about the organization’s work abroad and get acquainted with the people and mission behind the new El Dorado Hills business.
For Proxy Coffee, the grand opening marks another step in building a neighborhood coffee destination around both the experience inside the shop and what each purchase can help accomplish thousands of miles away.
The business describes that philosophy with another coffee-themed phrase: “Brew Some Good.”
The Proxy Coffee grand opening takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at 931 Lassen Lane in El Dorado Hills. The event is open to the community and will include food, coffee, music, giveaways and activities.
