What began as a vehicle crash quickly became a firefighting response in El Dorado Hills Thursday evening after the collision ignited dry roadside vegetation near the Bass Lake Grade.
Firefighters from the El Dorado Hills Fire Department and CAL FIRE’s Amador-El Dorado Unit were dispatched to the scene along Highway 50, where crews arrived to find both a traffic collision, involving a rollover, and a vegetation fire burning near the roadway.
According to the El Dorado Hills Fire Department, firefighters immediately split their efforts, with crews working to quickly stop the fire from spreading through the dry vegetation while others assisted with the traffic collision, assessed those involved and helped secure the scene.
Their collaborative response prevented the roadside fire from growing far beyond its point of origin. One person was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Officials have not released the severity of the individual’s injuries, and no additional information about the occupants has been released.
The incident creates a reminder of how quickly crashes can lead to additional hazards during our region’s fire season and extreme dry conditions. A single spark, hot engine component or damaged vehicle can ignite dry roadside grasses within moments, creating a second emergency for first responders already dealing with a traffic collision.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Additional information regarding the collision is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
