GRANITE BAY — Evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted after firefighters stopped the forward progress of a vegetation fire that threatened homes in Granite Bay Saturday afternoon.
The King Fire broke out near Sierra College Boulevard and King Ranch Place, prompting Placer County sheriff’s deputies to evacuate residents from several nearby streets as firefighters worked to slow the blaze.
The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, and was initially described by incident command as a vegetation fire burning in grass at a moderate to dangerous rate of spread. Additional engines were requested as crews responded to the area.
As the fire grew to approximately 5 acres, evacuation orders were issued for residents along Cavitt Ranch Place, Hidden Valley Place, Baywood Road, J-Bar-B Drive and King Ranch Place. Residents within the evacuation zone were instructed to leave immediately while deputies worked through the neighborhood.
By 4:10 p.m., firefighters had stopped the forward progress of the fire, allowing authorities to downgrade the evacuation orders to warnings.
Those warnings were later lifted entirely as crews gained control of the incident.
“All evacuation warnings lifted,” the Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced in its final evacuation update. “Thank you to everyone who quickly left their homes. Stay safe Placer County!”
The fire was listed at approximately 5 acres after forward progress was stopped. No injuries were immediately reported in connection with the incident, and officials had not announced any structure damage as of Saturday evening.
The fire produced a visible column of smoke during its early stages that could be seen from surrounding areas of Granite Bay and neighboring communities.
Firefighters remain at the scene following the halt in forward progress to continue containment and mop-up operations.
