Quick action by neighbors and a rapid response from firefighters kept a Thursday morning fire on Chesterfield Way from spreading into the living quarters of a Folsom home, according to the Folsom Fire Department.
The fire was reported at approximately 10:50 a.m. in the 100 block of Chesterfield Way. Initial reports to the Sacramento Regional Fire Emergency Communications Center described a fence fire outside the residence. While firefighters were en route, dispatchers received updated information that flames had spread to the roof, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a complete first-alarm assignment.
A passerby and neighbors reported seeing flames along the exterior garage area of the home as the fire developed.
A Folsom Fire Department battalion chief and engine, along with a Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District engine and truck company, were already traveling in the immediate area when the call was dispatched. Their proximity allowed the first crews to reach the home within four minutes, according to the Folsom Fire Department.
Arriving firefighters found active fire burning on the exterior of the home near the garage area and immediately began knocking down the flames while other crews prepared to check the residence for possible extension.
The homeowners were not home at the time, requiring firefighters to force entry into the residence. Crews searched and checked the interior for fire extension, but no active fire was found inside the home’s living quarters after the exterior flames were extinguished.
“Neighbors quick thinking and calling 911 and our swift response from firefighters kept damage to the exterior of the home,” said Nick Lawlor, public information officer for the Folsom Fire Department.
The initial first-alarm response included six engines, three truck companies and two medic units, with resources dispatched from the Folsom Fire Department, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District and El Dorado Hills Fire Department.
Several responding units were cleared shortly after the fire was brought under control. At approximately 11:20 a.m., four units remained at the residence as firefighters continued mop-up operations, checked for hot spots and worked to secure the home.
No firefighters or members of the public were injured. Utility service at the residence was being repaired following the fire.
The cause remained under active investigation Thursday afternoon. According to the Folsom Fire Department, early indications pointed to a possible exterior electrical issue, but investigators had not determined an official cause.
Fire officials also noted that the Chesterfield Way residence had working smoke detectors. The department used Thursday’s incident as a reminder for residents to regularly test smoke alarms, make sure batteries remain in working order and check the age of each detector.
Many smoke alarms have an operational life of approximately 10 years. Chirping or other end-of-life alerts can indicate that the entire unit, rather than simply its battery, needs to be replaced.
