Spotted Dog Yoga & SUP plans large-scale floating fitness finale during PaddleSplash festival

Lake Natoma will become the setting for a large-scale floating fitness gathering next month as Spotted Dog Yoga & SUP brings 100 paddleboarders together for “The Big Splash,” a SUP yoga event planned as the grand finale of the PaddleSplash Water & Wellness Festival.

The event takes place Sunday, Sept. 13, at Black Miners Bar, where participants will take to the water for a 4:30 p.m. movement and balance class led by Spotted Dog Yoga & SUP co-founder Nick Clark. Organizers are aiming to assemble 100 participants on paddleboards with Folsom’s Rainbow Bridge providing the backdrop.

Produced in collaboration with Visit Folsom, Choose Folsom and the PaddleSplash Water & Wellness Festival, The Big Splash is part of a weekend celebrating Folsom’s growing paddling community and its designation as the “Paddle Capital of the West.”

Spotted Dog Yoga & SUP has offered floating fitness programs locally since 2019. The Sept. 13 event takes that concept to a considerably larger scale, while organizers say the class itself is intended to remain accessible to newcomers.

No previous yoga or paddleboarding experience is required. Participants must, however, be able to swim and bring their own paddleboard and paddle or arrange a rental before the event. Twenty volunteers from Spotted Dog Yoga & SUP and Nor Cal SUP are expected to assist with water safety throughout the class.

“Movement on the water isn’t just a workout—it’s an adventure,” Clark said. “We wanted to create something unforgettable that brings our community together on the water, challenges our balance, shares a few laughs through the wobbles, and celebrates everything we love about Folsom.”

The timing of the event will also put the group on Lake Natoma shortly before another major Folsom gathering gets underway above them. The Big Splash is scheduled as a lead-in to the annual Dinner on the Rainbow Bridge, which this year will also celebrate the city’s 80th anniversary. As dinner guests begin arriving on the bridge, organizers expect the 100-person class to be visible on the water below.

The event will also include music, giveaways and swag bags for participants. Local singles group Dates Not Apps is participating with a “singles visible” component, offering wristbands to single participants interested in meeting others during the event.

Each of the 100 registered participants will receive a swag bag featuring items from local businesses and organizations including Ginger Elizabeth, Hearts 4 Heroes USA, Uncle Charlie’s Firehouse & Brew and The El Dorado Solar Dude. A raffle is also planned, with prizes including a year of yoga from Spotted Dog Yoga & SUP and two wine-tasting experiences from Sentivo Vineyards.

Beyond the activities on the water, PaddleSplash serves as an annual fundraiser benefiting Nor Cal SUP Groms. Proceeds help support youth outreach efforts providing water-safety education, equipment and opportunities for aquatic recreation to foster and at-risk youth.

Registration for The Big Splash is $49 and is limited to 100 participants. Check-in will take place from 3 to 3:45 p.m., followed by the class at 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required, and organizers will not accept drop-ins or event-day registrations.

Those who need equipment can arrange paddleboard rentals through local providers SUP California or Venture Wild Paddle Boards.

Additional, smaller SUP yoga sessions are scheduled throughout the PaddleSplash Water & Wellness Festival weekend. Spotted Dog Yoga & SUP will offer 20-person classes Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 9 and 11 a.m.
