Several Folsom city buildings will receive new exterior paint as part of a $220,000 maintenance project approved by the Folsom City Council on Tuesday.

The City Council approved a painting contract during its Sept. 8 meeting covering City Hall, the Folsom Police Department, Folsom Community Center, Folsom Public Library, Parks Maintenance Shop and Fire Stations 35 and 37.

While the work will update the appearance of the facilities, city officials said the project is primarily intended as preventive maintenance for buildings that have been exposed to the elements for decades.

Many of the facilities included in the project are more than 30 years old, and some still have their original exterior paint. As exterior coatings deteriorate over time, building materials can become more susceptible to weather exposure and water intrusion, potentially resulting in more extensive and costly repairs.

Repainting the buildings is intended to protect their exterior surfaces, extend the useful life of existing materials and reduce the likelihood of larger maintenance expenses in the future.

The City Council authorized $220,000 for the project, a figure that includes a 10% contingency. Funding will come from remaining American Rescue Plan Act funds available to the city.

The work will bring visible changes to several prominent public buildings across Folsom while addressing maintenance needs at facilities that have served the community for decades.
