Bee-themed activities, live demonstrations and a taste of zoo-harvested honey are on tap Saturday
Things will be buzzing at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary this weekend, and this time it won’t just be the usual chatter from the animals.
The zoo will celebrate National Honey Bee Day on Saturday, Aug. 15, with a morning dedicated to some of nature’s smallest — and busiest — workers. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., visitors can take part in bee-themed activities, learn more about pollinators and even get an up-close look at live honey bees without having to worry about getting a little too close.
The live bees will be safely enclosed for demonstrations designed to give visitors a closer look at how they live and work. Educational displays throughout the event will also explore the important role bees and other pollinators play in the environment and the plants and foods people depend on.
And because it would hardly be a honey bee celebration without something sweet, visitors will have a chance to sample honey at tasting tables during the event.
There’s a particularly local twist to this honey: It comes straight from the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary.
Jars of honey harvested at the zoo will be available for purchase while supplies last. Those hoping to bring some home may want to make the honey table an early stop. Zoo officials say last year’s batch sold out quickly.
National Honey Bee Day is observed annually to recognize beekeepers, honey bees and the role pollinators play in agriculture and ecosystems. Saturday’s celebration gives families an opportunity to learn more about that work while spending a morning exploring the zoo sanctuary.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. Regular zoo admission rates apply, and the bee activities are included with admission.
So whether you’re coming for the bees, the honey or simply looking for something different to do on a Saturday morning, there should be plenty of buzz to go around.
