Residents, neighborhood groups, nonprofits, schools and community organizations now have additional time to help shape one of the city’s largest volunteer events of the year after the City of Folsom extended the deadline for Community Service Day project proposals.
During their most recent meeting, Folsom Mayor Justin Raithel and members of the Community Service Day Steering Committee decided to extend the deadline to submit project ideas for the 13th annual Folsom Community Service Day has been extended through July 31, giving the community several more weeks to suggest projects that can make a lasting difference throughout the city.
The annual event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, when hundreds of volunteers will fan out across Folsom to complete service projects benefiting neighborhoods, schools, parks, nonprofits and residents.
The extension is intended to encourage additional project submissions and provide additional opportunities for residents, neighborhood groups, schools and nonprofit organizations to submit projects that can benefit the community during the annual day of service.
Community Service Day has become one of Folsom’s signature volunteer traditions since its launch, bringing together residents of all ages to complete projects that improve neighborhoods and strengthen the community. Over the past 12 years, the program has generated an impressive impact, with more than 24,900 volunteers completing more than 1,130 projects throughout the city. Volunteers have also collected more than 691,000 pounds of food for Twin Lakes Food Bank, completed more than 660 exterior home repair and maintenance projects for senior residents, assembled thousands of care packages for active-duty military members and supported numerous local nonprofit organizations.
Project ideas are being accepted for a wide variety of community improvements. Suggested projects may include neighborhood beautification efforts, park and trail enhancements, school improvement projects, nonprofit assistance, environmental restoration, public art, community cleanups, and projects that help seniors, veterans or others in need.
The city describes Community Service Day as a modern-day “community barn-raising,” bringing together volunteers, businesses, civic organizations and local groups to complete projects that create lasting improvements while fostering civic pride and community involvement.
