Pre-K students shine in recycled runway fashion show celebrating Earth Day
Creativity, confidence and a powerful message about sustainability took center stage this week as Pre-K students at The Goddard School of Folsom transformed recycled materials into imaginative fashion during the school’s annual Recycled Runway Fashion Show.
Held on April 22 in celebration of Earth Day, the event brought together students, parents and staff for a lively and inspiring showcase that blended early childhood education with environmental awareness. The classroom turned runway featured a parade of young designers proudly modeling outfits crafted from everyday discarded items—newspapers, cardboard, fabric scraps and other repurposed materials—each piece telling its own story of creativity and care for the planet.
From intricately woven paper dresses to cardboard ensembles adorned with hand-cut designs, the students’ creations highlighted not only artistic expression but also the importance of rethinking waste. One student donned a globe-inspired costume, symbolizing the shared responsibility of protecting the Earth, while others incorporated bold textures and patterns using reused packaging and printed materials.
The event drew smiles and applause from families gathered inside the classroom, where the runway atmosphere was complete with music, decorations and an enthusiastic audience cheering on each participant. Teachers guided students through the experience, encouraging them to showcase their work and build confidence as they stepped forward one by one.
Beyond the fashion, the event served as a hands-on extension of the school’s STEAM-based curriculum, integrating science, technology, engineering, art and math concepts into meaningful, real-world learning. By designing and constructing their outfits, students explored problem-solving, creativity and environmental responsibility in a way that was both engaging and memorable.
The fashion show also reflected The Goddard School’s broader educational philosophy, which emphasizes curiosity-driven learning and the development of social, emotional and academic skills. Through projects like the Recycled Runway, students are introduced to concepts such as sustainability and conservation at an early age, helping to shape habits and awareness that can last a lifetime.
Parents in attendance captured photos and videos as their children took part in the celebration, many noting the pride and excitement the students displayed. The event not only highlighted the children’s work but also reinforced the connection between home and school in fostering creativity and environmental mindfulness.
