The Theatre Department at Folsom High School is inviting the community to experience “Agatha Rex,” a thought-provoking and dynamic student production that reimagines a classic Greek tragedy for a modern audience.
Written by playwright Lindsay Price, “Agatha Rex” is a contemporary retelling of the ancient play “Antigone” by Sophocles. Set in a present-day high school, the play transforms the traditional Greek chorus into a vibrant student ensemble, giving more than 25 performers the opportunity to act as the collective voice of the student body.
At Thebes High, everything is carefully controlled, from how students behave to what they wear, and the expectation is simple: follow the rules without question. But beneath this familiar setting lies a deeper story about fairness, courage, and standing up for what you believe is right.
When Agatha Rex, a respected student leader, sees her brother punished unfairly, she faces a difficult decision: remain the perfect student everyone expects her to be, or risk everything to challenge a rule she believes is unjust. Through her journey, the play asks a powerful question: When rules conflict with what we know is right, what responsibility do we have to speak up?
In an interview about the play, Price explains how the ancient story translates naturally into a high school setting. “The original story translated seamlessly to the high school stage: Antigone defies the king to honor her brother, while Agatha defies the principal to support hers.”
While the stakes in this modern retelling are not life or death, Agatha’s choice still carries serious consequences. Her decision could cost her reputation, her opportunities, and everything she has worked toward—raising questions about justice, personal responsibility, and what it truly means to do the right thing.

Director Tamara Mosier says the production was selected for the opportunities it provides students both artistically and intellectually. “We chose this production for the unique opportunities it offers our students, both in terms of exploring the themes of the play and performing as a Greek-style chorus.”
The ensemble plays a central role in the storytelling, acting as both supporters and skeptics of Agatha’s actions. As the voice of the student body, they encourage her at times and retreat when her choices become more difficult, creating the shifting emotional atmosphere of the play.
The cast is led by seniors Jovie Carr as Agatha, Bryce Garcia as Dr. Creon, Kayden Maclure as Elliott Rex, Andrew Warren as Paul Rex, Delaney Serrano as Eunice, and William DuChien as Harry Creon. The production also features a large student chorus of more than 25 performers.
At its heart, “Agatha Rex” explores themes that resonate strongly in school communities and beyond—obedience, individuality, friendship, fairness, and the courage it takes to question authority. The play invites audiences to reflect on important questions: How do we define right and wrong? Should someone be judged differently because of their reputation? What responsibility do we have to stand up for others?
Performances of “Agatha Rex” will take place March 20–21 and March 26–28 at 7:00 p.m. at Folsom High School. Tickets are available online atwww.our.show/fhsagatha.
