Rows of veteran graves stretched quietly amidst a see of waving American flags Monday morning as volunteers moved carefully through Folsom’s Lakeside Memorial Lawn Cemetery, placing red roses one by one beside the markers of fallen service members. Families stood silently together, veterans exchanged handshakes and salutes, and younger generations followed alongside those who have long carried the traditions of Memorial Day in the community.
Across the cemetery grounds and later at the Folsom Veterans Hall, the annual Memorial Day observance once again brought the Folsom community together to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States.
The tribute at Lakeside Memorial Lawn Cemetery remains one of the community’s most meaningful Memorial Day traditions, as volunteers carefully place roses at more than 700 veteran gravesites throughout the historic cemetery. By the end of the morning, hundreds of red roses rested against weathered markers representing generations of American conflicts, ensuring each veteran buried there was individually remembered.
The observance also reflected the deep sense of unity among the organizations and volunteers who came together to make the annual event possible. Members of the Rolling Hills Blue Star Moms, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6604, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the American Legion, the Marine Corps League and the Military Order of the Purple Heart all played important roles in organizing and supporting the Memorial Day activities.
Together, the groups coordinated the cemetery tribute, ceremony support, volunteer efforts and community luncheon that followed the observance, continuing a long-standing tradition of honoring fallen service members while supporting veterans and military families throughout the region. From parents of active-duty military personnel to combat veterans and longtime community volunteers, the gathering reflected generations united by service, sacrifice and remembrance.
Cisco Technology Company again partnered with the community effort by sponsoring the roses used throughout the cemetery tribute, helping continue the tradition of ensuring every veteran gravesite at the cemetery received recognition on Memorial Day.
Following the cemetery observance, community members gathered at the Folsom Veterans Hall for a Memorial Day ceremony and flag retirement honoring the meaning and legacy of the national holiday. Veterans stood alongside residents of varied as patriotic traditions and military customs helped connect the stories of past generations with those now learning the importance of remembrance today.
The annual luncheon that followed the ceremony offered another opportunity for fellowship among veterans, military families and community supporters, reinforcing the close bonds shared by the organizations that continue to preserve the meaning of Memorial Day in Folsom each year.
Throughout the day, the atmosphere carried both reflection and gratitude. Children carried roses beside veterans. Families paused quietly at headstones bearing names from wars spanning decades of American history.
For many who attended, the observance served as more than a ceremony. It was a reminder that Memorial Day remains one of the nation’s most sacred traditions — a day dedicated not to celebration, but to remembering the men and women who gave their lives in service to their country.
In addition to Folsom’s observance, communities across the Sacramento region gathered throughout Memorial Day to honor fallen service members with ceremonies, tributes and community events centered on remembrance and patriotism. Thousands attended events at historic venues, cemeteries and memorial sites as residents paused to reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of American military members.
At nearby Mt. Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, a traditional Memorial Day service featured an Air Force flyover while local scouts placed thousands of American flags at veterans’ gravesites throughout the cemetery grounds.
Additional remembrance ceremonies were held at East Lawn Memorial Parks in Sacramento and Elk Grove, the Sacramento VA Medical Center in Mather, and smaller community tributes in Auburn, Davis and Roseville. At Sacramento Memorial Auditorium — a landmark originally dedicated to World War I veterans — residents gathered for a remembrance ceremony featuring music and community reflection. The California Automobile Museum also hosted its annual Veterans’ Memorial Day Car Show along Front Street, blending classic automobiles with formal military recognition ceremonies honoring local veterans and fallen heroes.
Elsewhere, Memorial Day observances also included community-centered events designed to honor military service through activity and fellowship. The Sacramento Running Company hosted a Memorial Day 5K fun run that brought together athletes, veterans and families dressed in red, white and blue before gathering afterward for a community barbecue. Across the region, the shared message remained consistent throughout the day — honoring those who never returned home and ensuring their sacrifices continue to be remembered by future generations.
