Historic garden event invites public to compete, learn and tour on Feb. 28
One of Folsom’s most colorful late-winter traditions is set to bloom once again as the historic Murer House and Gardens hosts its Annual Camellia Show and Competition on Saturday, Feb. 28. This year marks a milestone for the local event and fundraiser, celebrating its 10th year.
The free community event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Murer House, 1125 Joe Murer Court, welcoming gardeners, flower enthusiasts and families to celebrate the beauty and diversity of camellias while enjoying a day steeped in local history.
Each year, the show transforms the century-old home and surrounding gardens into a vibrant display of blossoms ranging from classic white and blush pink to deep crimson and variegated varieties. The Camellia Society of Sacramento will be on site throughout the event to help guests identify specific camellia varieties and answer gardening questions, offering expert insight into one of the region’s most cherished winter blooms.
A highlight of the day will be a special presentation at 11 a.m. by Greg Gayton of Green Acres Nursery, who will share growing tips and advice on cultivating healthy camellias. His talk is expected to provide practical guidance for both seasoned gardeners and newcomers looking to add these striking flowers to their landscapes.
The public is encouraged to participate in the competition portion of the event by entering up to five single blooms and/or floral arrangements. Entries will be accepted beginning at 9:30 a.m. the morning of the show. Ribbons will be awarded in several categories, including the popular People’s Choice award, giving visitors an opportunity to vote for their favorite display.

In addition to the blossom showcase, attendees can take part in a drawing for camellia plants scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Free self-guided tours of the Murer House and Gardens will also be offered throughout the event, allowing visitors to explore the historic property while enjoying the seasonal blooms.
The Murer House is a treasured local landmark built in 1925 by Italian immigrant Guiseppe Murer, who purchased the property in 1921. Located across Folsom Boulevard near Historic Sutter Street, the home remains a symbol of Folsom’s rich cultural heritage and early 20th-century roots. The surrounding gardens provide a picturesque setting for the annual camellia celebration and serve as a living tribute to the region’s horticultural traditions.
Organizers invite the entire community to attend, whether to showcase prized blossoms, learn from experts or simply admire the vibrant displays that mark the arrival of spring in Folsom.
