The Folsom Police Department conducted a targeted e-bike and e-motorcycle enforcement operation this week, resulting in multiple citations, two illegally operated e-motorcycles being towed and dozens of contacts with riders aimed at improving safety on city streets.
The dedicated enforcement took place during the afternoon and evening hours as a coordinated team of officers utilized marked patrol vehicles, unmarked vehicles and a department drone to identify violations and conduct traffic stops involving e-bikes and e-motorcycles.
During the operation, officers voluntarily contacted and educated 19 riders on California’s e-bike laws and safe riding practices. Officers also issued eight citations, including two to individuals operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license. In addition, two illegally operated e-motorcycles were impounded and towed.
While enforcement was a key focus of the operation, the department emphasized that education remains its primary objective.
“Our goal is to ensure safe riding through education, but we will continue strict enforcement action when riders violate the law or operate in a manner that puts themselves or others at risk,” the department said in a statement. “Additional enforcement operations will continue throughout the summer.”
The enforcement effort comes as electric bicycles and higher-powered electric motorcycles continue to grow in popularity throughout the region. Folsom Police have reminded riders that not all electric two-wheeled vehicles fall under California’s e-bike classifications, and some require registration, licensing and other legal requirements to operate on public roadways.
The department encourages riders and parents to familiarize themselves with California’s e-bike laws and ensure all riders operate safely, obey traffic laws and use equipment that complies with state regulations.
