What’s one of the best ways to learn? Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty! TK through 5thgrade students from Folsom Preparatory School celebrated Earth Day with hands-on activities Friday afternoon, rotating through several outdoor stations led by parents, grandparents and volunteers from local organizations.
Students created their own battery recycling boxes and learned about composting and sorting organic waste, trash, recycling and household hazardous waste from the City of Folsom’s Waste & Recycling team. Christa Green, a UC Master Gardener, led students in an activity where they planted seeds in recycled egg cartons that they got to bring home. Students even learned all about bees and how vital they are to our environment, serving as one of nature’s most important pollinators.
Parents, Jessica Fraga and Megan Annis, shared about the work local nonprofits Sacramento Area Creeks Council and Friends of Folsom Parkways are doing to keep our trails and creeks clean. Students learned how Folsom’s creeks, parkways and oak woodlands support many plants and animals. In addition, the Bureau of Reclamation’s American River Water Education Center team helped students model the water cycle.
“We love seeing students’ eyes light up when we have special events like this. Getting outside into nature and learning by doing creates wonderful “Aha!” moments for them. Learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom. That’s why we create as many opportunities as possible throughout the day for hands-on activities, whether it’s our STEAM or drama and music classes or a school-wide event like this,” said Candis Murawski, Head of School.
Every child can effect positive change which is why equipping and empowering them with the tools and knowledge to make our community a better place begins with all of us.
