13-year-old Carter Hemsley completes rigorous four-year program, showcasing innovation in coding and game development
A 13-year-old Folsom student is making local history in the world of technology and education, earning the highest distinction in a nationally recognized coding program after years of dedication, creativity and hands-on learning.
Carter Hemsley has become the first student to earn a Black Belt from Code Ninjas Folsom, completing the center’s rigorous four-year curriculum in coding and game development. The milestone, achieved in December, marks the highest level of mastery within the program and reflects Carter’s advanced skills in programming, problem-solving and independent project creation.
Throughout his time in the program, Carter demonstrated a strong ability to think critically and creatively, building a foundation that extended well beyond basic coding principles. His journey culminated in the development of his own original game, Monkeyball, a project that showcased both his technical ability and his imagination.
Carter’s passion for technology and innovation began years before completing the program. At just nine years old, he launched Monkeybeard Gaming, a kid-focused gaming and educational channel designed to help young learners better understand game mechanics and development concepts. Created with a peer-to-peer approach, the channel offers instructional content made by a young creator for other young learners, and it has since generated more than 39,000 views.
His achievement reflects not only personal dedication but also the growing opportunities for youth in STEM-related education within the Folsom community. By completing the program at such a young age, Carter has set a new benchmark locally while highlighting the impact of early exposure to technology and hands-on learning environments.
Earning a Black Belt remains a rare accomplishment within the Code Ninjas program, requiring years of commitment, problem-solving and project-based learning. Carter’s success underscores the potential of young students to excel in complex fields when given the tools, guidance and encouragement to explore their interests.
