Illumination continues Sunday night honoring volunteers, donors and lifesaving mission
The Johnny Cash Bridge was illuminated in red Saturday night as the City of Folsom joined communities nationwide in recognizing Red Cross Month, paying tribute to the volunteers, donors and partners who support the American Red Cross.
The bridge, located along Folsom Lake Crossing, lit up the night sky with a vivid red glow, drawing community members to the span to take in the display and reflect on the organization’s ongoing humanitarian efforts. The illumination will continue Sunday night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., offering another opportunity for residents to experience the tribute.
“Observed every March, Red Cross Month honors those who help carry out the mission of the American Red Cross — individuals who turn compassion into action by assisting others during emergencies and times of need,” said Stephen Walsh, Communications Director for the American Red Cross California Gold Country Region. “The tradition dates back to 1943, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first official proclamation recognizing the organization’s vital contributions.”
Walsh was present for Saturday’s lighting alongside fellow representatives and volunteers of the American Red Cross, as well as members of the community who gathered on the bridge to take part in the special moment.
Saturday night’s display marked a first-of-its-kind moment for the Johnny Cash Bridge, as its red illumination symbolized the lifesaving work carried out by Red Cross volunteers across the region and beyond. Visitors strolled the bridge throughout the evening hours, capturing photos and sharing the moment in support of the organization’s mission.
The weekend display serves not only as a visual tribute but also as a call to action for the community. Residents are encouraged to get involved by volunteering, donating blood, learning lifesaving skills or making financial contributions to support those impacted by disasters and emergencies.
The Red Cross encourages attendees to continue sharing their photos and videos from the illuminated bridge on social media, tagging @arcgoldcountry to help spread awareness throughout the community.
The bridge will remain lit in red through early Sunday morning and again Sunday night, concluding the weekend tribute.
