Vista del Lago wasted little time giving its Homecoming crowd something to celebrate, scoring on its first three possessions and building a 35-0 halftime lead on the way to a 48-22 victory over Rio Americano.

The Eagles struck first when John Brett Bridges connected with Luke Roberts for a 28-yard touchdown. Bridges and Roberts teamed up again for a 20-yard score on Vista’s next possession before Bridges added a 1-yard touchdown run, giving the Eagles a 21-0 advantage after the opening quarter.

Vista kept adding to the lead in the second. Jacoby More found Cael Rens for a 16-yard touchdown, and Cruz Becerra scored on a 4-yard run after a long completion moved the Eagles inside the Rio Americano 5. Jake Colangelo converted all five first-half extra points as Vista carried a 35-0 lead into halftime.

The Eagles quickly extended the margin after the break. More connected with Gavin Brainerd for a 30-yard touchdown following a Rio Americano punt, pushing Vista’s lead to 42-0.

Rio Americano finally broke through on a 2-yard touchdown run by James McCormac, but Vista answered again. Bridges found Ryan Mallet for a 4-yard touchdown pass, giving the Eagles a 48-6 advantage.

With the outcome largely decided and a running clock in effect, Rio Americano scored twice in the fourth quarter. McCormac threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Braylen Moore and completed a two-point conversion to Levi Milanovich Oliver. The Raiders later returned an interception for a touchdown and added another two-point conversion for the final 48-22 margin.

Vista del Lago returns to action next when the Eagles travel to Christian Brothers.

Folsom pulls away from Granite Bay for 43-7 league victory

Folsom and Granite Bay were separated by only seven points at halftime Friday night. By the end of the third quarter, the Bulldogs had taken control.

Quarterback Brody Rudnicki threw six touchdown passes, including three to Jaden Angel, as Folsom scored the final 36 points of a 43-7 Sierra Foothill League victory.

Rudnicki opened the scoring with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Angel in the first quarter. Granite Bay responded after intercepting a Folsom pass early in the second, using the short field to score on a 10-yard run and tie the game 7-7.

The Bulldogs regained the lead with one of their most important drives of the night. Starting at their own 5-yard line, they marched 95 yards before Rudnicki connected with Arhian Acuna for a 9-yard touchdown. The extra point sent Folsom into halftime leading 14-7.

Folsom quickly created separation after the break. Rudnicki found Angel for a 29-yard touchdown to make it 21-7 before the Bulldogs’ defense produced another turning point.

Granite Bay drove to the Folsom 20 and threatened to cut into the lead, but Elijah Williams intercepted a fourth-down pass to end the possession. Rudnicki then connected with Declan Dixon on a long completion before finding Angel for a 16-yard touchdown, their third scoring connection of the night.

That gave Folsom a 28-7 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Bronson Bambino helped set up the Bulldogs’ next score with a long run to the Granite Bay 5. Rudnicki followed with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Acuna, his second scoring connection with Acuna and fifth touchdown pass of the game. Folsom added two points after the touchdown to extend its lead to 36-7.

Rudnicki finished his six-touchdown performance later in the fourth. After connecting with Travis Beatty on a long completion that moved the Bulldogs inside the Granite Bay 15, Rudnicki found Beatty again for an 8-yard touchdown and the final 43-7 margin.

Angel caught touchdown passes of 38, 29 and 16 yards. Acuna had scoring receptions of 9 and 5 yards, while Beatty caught the final touchdown.

Folsom’s defense did its part throughout the second half. Lua DeBerry and Giovanni Strivers recorded sacks during the game, Williams came up with the interception in Folsom territory, and Granite Bay was held scoreless after tying the game early in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs scored 29 unanswered points after halftime and 36 straight after Granite Bay tied the game, turning a seven-point halftime advantage into a 36-point victory. Folsom returns home next to host Whitney in Sierra Foothill League play.

Oak Ridge breaks fourth-quarter deadlock to beat Rocklin 28-14

Three quarters weren’t enough to separate Oak Ridge and Rocklin on Friday night. The Trojans needed only one strong fourth quarter to do it.

Oak Ridge scored 14 unanswered points in the final period and shut out Rocklin throughout the second half to earn a 28-14 Sierra Foothill League victory.

The Trojans scored through the air on their opening possession and Giovanni Accettura added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Rocklin answered in the second quarter, finishing a lengthy drive with a 1-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-goal to tie the game 7-7.

Oak Ridge responded on its next possession. Nick Johnson connected with Nate Anzelc for a 19-yard touchdown pass, and Accettura’s PAT restored the Trojans’ seven-point lead.

Rocklin answered just before halftime. The Thunder reached the Oak Ridge 1 but were stopped on three consecutive plays near the goal line before scoring on fourth down with 15.9 seconds remaining. The extra point sent the teams into halftime tied 14-14.

Neither team scored in the third quarter as the defenses controlled play, setting up a decisive final period.

Oak Ridge took over at its own 16 early in the fourth and put together the drive that changed the game. Johnson connected with Anzelc on a long completion to the Rocklin 22, and the Trojans eventually worked their way to the 1. Johnson finished the drive with a quarterback keeper for the touchdown, and Accettura’s extra point gave Oak Ridge a 21-14 lead.

The Trojans’ defense then delivered the game’s biggest turnover.

Oak Ridge intercepted a Rocklin pass and returned the ball deep into Thunder territory, giving the offense an opportunity to turn a one-score lead into two. After a bad snap briefly moved the Trojans backward, Sean Gasten scored on a 6-yard run.

Accettura converted his fourth extra point to make it 28-14. Rocklin’s final possession was hampered by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty before Oak Ridge forced a turnover on downs and ran out the remaining time.

Johnson accounted for two identified touchdowns, throwing the 19-yard score to Anzelc and rushing for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth. Gasten supplied the insurance score, while Accettura finished 4-for-4 on extra points.

The Trojans did not allow a point after Rocklin tied the game with 15.9 seconds remaining in the first half. A second-half shutout, a key interception and two fourth-quarter touchdowns turned a 14-14 deadlock into a 28-14 Oak Ridge victory. Oak Ridge returns home next to host Tabor Academy of Massachusetts in a nonleague game.

Cordova suffers first loss as Vallejo spoils Homecoming 24-13

Cordova High School’s unbeaten start ended Friday night as Vallejo rallied from a second-half deficit to hand the Lancers their first loss of the season, 24-13.

Cordova entered the game 4-0 and held a 13-10 lead before Vallejo moved ahead in the third quarter. The visitors scored on the ground and converted the extra point to take a 17-13 advantage.

The Lancers remained within one score entering the fourth and got an opportunity to regain the lead when Vallejo drove inside the Cordova 20 but missed a field goal. Cordova took possession at its own 15 still trailing by only four.

The Lancers were unable to capitalize, and Vallejo eventually added the score that gave the visitors some separation. A rushing touchdown and extra point extended the lead to 24-13 with just over four minutes remaining.

Cordova got the football back for one final opportunity late in the fourth, taking possession at its own 39. Vallejo intercepted a Lancers pass with just over two minutes remaining, ending Cordova’s comeback bid.

For Cordova, the loss ended a four-game winning streak to open the season and dropped the Lancers to 4-1. Cordova returns to action next when the Lancers travel to West Park in Roseville.
