Beloved musical featuring Danny, Sandy, the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds opens June 27 for a month-long run in Historic Folsom
Summer lovin’ is headed to Historic Folsom as Sutter Street Theatre prepares to openGrease School Version, bringing one of the most beloved musicals of all time to local audiences beginning June 27.
Packed with memorable songs, energetic dance numbers and a timeless story of teenage romance, the family-friendly production will run through July 26 as part of the theater’s popular Family Series.
Directed by Crystal Mayer, with music direction by Christine Irish and choreography by Keira LePage, the production brings the halls of Rydell High to life with the characters and music that have entertained audiences for generations.
Set in 1959,Greasefollows the summer romance between Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski, two teenagers who unexpectedly discover they are now classmates after sharing a memorable summer together. As they attempt to rekindle their relationship, they must navigate the pressures of high school life while balancing expectations from their friends and social circles.
At the center of the story are Danny’s greaser gang, the T-Birds, and Sandy’s new friends, the Pink Ladies. Their adventures unfold through a rock-and-roll soundtrack filled with some of musical theater’s most recognizable songs, including “Summer Nights” and “Greased Lightnin’.”
Since premiering on Broadway in 1972,Greasehas become one of the most successful and enduring musicals in theater history. Its nostalgic look at teenage life in the late 1950s, combined with its catchy music and unforgettable characters, has helped it remain a favorite among audiences of all ages.
The School Version has been specially adapted for younger performers and family audiences while preserving the humor, energy and heart of the original production. Rated G, the show contains no content warnings and is suitable for all ages.
Performances are scheduled Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. from June 27 through July 26, with special evening performances on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. There will be no performances during the Fourth of July weekend.

Something Happened on the Way to the Forum Continues the Summer Season
WhileGreasetakes over the Family Series stage this summer, audiences can also catch Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical comedySomething Happened on the Way to the Forum, which continues its run at Sutter Street Theatre through July 19.
The Tony Award-winning Broadway classic transports audiences to ancient Rome for a fast-paced comedy filled with mistaken identities, elaborate schemes, romance and nonstop laughs. Widely regarded as one of Sondheim’s most celebrated works, the show has entertained theatergoers for more than six decades with its sharp wit and memorable score.
Directed by Brian Gagni, the production features the iconic opening number “Comedy Tonight” and follows the adventures of Pseudolus, a clever slave determined to win his freedom through a series of increasingly outrageous plans. The result is a whirlwind of deception, confusion and comic chaos that has made the musical a favorite of audiences since its Broadway debut.
Running concurrently withGreasefor much of July,Forumgives local theatergoers the opportunity to experience two distinctly different productions at the same venue — one a family-friendly trip back to the halls of Rydell High and the other a classic Broadway farce set in ancient Rome.
