Beloved film favorite comes to life on stage with music, comedy and a whole lot of family chaos
“Helloooooo!” Everyone’s favorite Scottish nanny is headed to the stage in Folsom this weekend as the hit Broadway musical Mrs. Doubtfire arrives at the Harris Center for the Arts for a limited run packed with laughter, music, heart and enough costume changes to make anyone dizzy.
Based on the iconic 1993 film made famous by the late Robin Williams, the internationally acclaimed musical comedy will take audiences on a hilarious and emotional ride May 22-24 at the Harris Center on the campus of Folsom Lake College.
The story centers around Daniel Hillard, a struggling actor and devoted father whose life spirals after a difficult divorce leaves him fighting to remain close to his children. Desperate to stay involved in their lives, Daniel transforms himself into the unforgettable Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire — complete with wig, glasses, makeup, accent and all the chaos that follows.
What unfolds is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, fast-moving comedy and heartfelt moments that have made Mrs. Doubtfire one of the most enduring family comedies of all time. But on stage, the story takes on an entirely new life with original music, energetic choreography and theatrical spectacle that expands the story far beyond the film audiences remember.
The production has become a major hit on tour, earning praise from critics around the world for balancing laugh-out-loud comedy with touching themes of family, forgiveness and the lengths parents will go for their children. The Manchester Evening News called the show “wonderful, heart-warming, and laugh-out-loud funny,” while The Hollywood Reporterdescribed it as “a feel-good, family-friendly comedy that delivers.”
At the center of the production is the larger-than-life Mrs. Doubtfire herself, whose quick wit, accidental disasters and perfectly timed one-liners keep audiences roaring from scene to scene. Whether she’s cooking questionable meals, dodging suspicion or scrambling through impossible costume changes, the lovable nanny remains as chaotic and charming as ever.
Fans of the original film will recognize many favorite moments while also discovering new songs and stage sequences written specifically for the musical adaptation. The production features a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, with music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, the Tony Award-nominated team behind Something Rotten!
The musical’s original Broadway production was directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks and helped transform the classic Robin Williams comedy into a modern theatrical crowd-pleaser that continues drawing audiences across the country.
The current national tour rolling into Folsom is produced by Work Light Productions and is part of an extensive touring schedule that continues carrying the show to theaters throughout North America. The Harris Center run includes five performances beginning Friday night at 7:30 p.m., followed by shows Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday performances at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for select shows this weekend.
