Self-guided mobile app and tour highlights Sutter Street landmarks, rail history and river views

Visitors and residents now have a new way to experience the rich history of one of the region’s most iconic districts. A newly launched Historic Folsom Walking Tour invites participants to discover the people, places and big ideas that shaped the city while exploring downtown on their own schedule.

The self-guided experience winds through the heart of Historic Folsom, highlighting the district’s Gold Rush roots, railroad heritage and scenic riverfront landmarks. Participants can follow the tour using the STQRY app which provides an interactive map, historic photos and short audio stories that bring each location to life as visitors walk from stop to stop.

Stops along the tour include many of the area’s most recognizable landmarks, including Sutter Street, Leidesdorff Plaza, the historic railroad turntable and depot, and the Truss Bridge overlooking the American River. The experience illustrates how the once-rugged Gold Rush outpost gradually evolved into the vibrant downtown district that now serves as a cultural and entertainment hub for the community.

Participants can begin the walk at Historic Folsom Plaza near the railroad turntable or jump in at any point along the route. From there, the path winds past historic storefronts, gathering places and transportation landmarks that played key roles in the city’s early growth. The tour concludes with views from the Truss Bridge, where visitors can take in the American River that helped shape the region’s development.

Because the tour is self-guided, visitors can explore at their own pace while enjoying the district’s shops, cafés and museums along the way. Most people spend about one to two hours completing the walk, covering roughly 1.5 to 2 miles depending on how long they stop at each location.

Parking for the tour is readily available throughout the Historic District. Complimentary parking is typically available at the 315-space Historic Folsom parking garage at 905 Leidesdorff Street, along with additional street and public lot options nearby.

The route follows public sidewalks and plazas throughout the district. While most of the path is accessible, surfaces can vary in some areas near rail features and bridge approaches.

Visitors who want to extend their outing can easily connect to the nearby American River Parkway and Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail, offering additional opportunities for walking or cycling along the river.

Organizers recommend bringing water, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes for the tour. Participants are also encouraged to explore the local businesses and museums along the route, many of which offer additional historical insights that complement the landmarks featured on the tour.
