The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents throughout the region to remain alert as investigators continue to see an increase in jewelry distraction thefts targeting shoppers at busy retail centers and parking lots across Sacramento County and surrounding communities.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the crimes are often carried out by suspects who appear friendly and non-threatening, using conversation and physical distractions to steal valuable jewelry without victims realizing it until later.
Authorities said suspects have used a variety of tactics, including asking for directions, offering fake gifts, giving unsolicited hugs, performing so-called “blessings,” or requesting assistance. During the encounter, suspects allegedly remove necklaces or other valuable jewelry and, in some cases, replace them with fake items. Investigators said some incidents have involved the use of force.
The Sheriff’s Office said victims have most commonly included adults between the ages of 50 and 70 and older, members of the Asian community, and both men and women.
Recent thefts have been reported at or near several high-traffic shopping destinations, including Costco, Sam’s Club, Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, 99 Ranch Market, SF Market and other busy commercial areas.
Investigators also warned that in some cases, suspects have reportedly followed victims home before carrying out the theft.
Authorities are encouraging residents to take simple precautions to reduce the risk of becoming a victim. Expensive jewelry should be kept covered or left at home whenever possible, and people should never allow strangers to place jewelry, scarves or other items around their necks. The Sheriff’s Office also advises people to be cautious of unsolicited hugs, blessings or unnecessary physical contact, remain aware of their surroundings in parking lots and shopping centers, and trust their instincts if a situation feels suspicious.
Anyone who becomes a victim or witnesses suspicious activity is urged to report it immediately. If the crime is in progress, call 911. For non-emergency reports, contact the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115.
Investigators also recommend preserving any evidence left behind, including counterfeit jewelry that may have been exchanged during the theft, and recording suspect descriptions, vehicle information and license plate numbers whenever it can be done safely.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to share the warning with family, friends and neighbors, noting that public awareness remains one of the most effective ways to help prevent these crimes.
