Denver quartet blends tradition and innovation in high-energy Historic Folsom performance
A fresh and electrifying take on bluegrass music arrives in Historic Folsom this Sunday, March 22, as Denver-based quartet Magoo takes the stage at the Folsom Hotel Saloon.
Known for pushing the boundaries of traditional bluegrass, Magoo has built a growing national reputation for performances that combine technical precision, heartfelt storytelling, and fearless improvisation. The group’s sound bridges the roots of the genre with a modern, progressive edge, creating a live experience that resonates with both longtime bluegrass fans and new audiences alike.
Formed in Denver, Colorado, Magoo approaches bluegrass with both deep respect and bold creativity. Their music draws from the rich traditions of the genre while incorporating extended instrumental jams, intricate original arrangements, and tight three-part harmonies that showcase the band’s cohesion and musical depth. The result is a dynamic performance style that moves seamlessly from delicate, melody-driven passages to high-energy, foot-stomping grooves.
Each member of the quartet brings award-winning musicianship to the stage. Dobro player Dylan Flynn captured first place at the Dobro Competition at the 2024 RockyGrass Festival, delivering the soulful tone that anchors much of the band’s sound. Guitarist Erik Hill earned second place in the Flatpicking Guitar Contest at the same event, adding rhythmic drive and inventive phrasing that propels the group forward. Mandolinist Courtlyn Bills contributes precision and fiery lead work, while bassist Denton Turner provides the steady foundation that keeps the band’s intricate arrangements grounded and cohesive.
Magoo’s rise within the bluegrass scene has been marked by a string of notable accomplishments. In 2024, the band claimed first place at the UllrGrass Band Competition in Golden, Colorado, and also took top honors at the Clash of the Strings battle of the bands presented by Winter WonderGrass and Bandwagon. They further cemented their reputation with a second-place finish at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, one of the genre’s most respected stages.
Beyond competitions, the band has continued to build momentum through festival appearances and headline performances across the country. Magoo has taken the stage at events including Winter WonderGrass, Grand Lake Folk Festival, RapidGrass Festival, and Huck Finn Jubilee, consistently drawing strong audience response. Their sold-out headlining show at Globe Hall in Denver in late 2024 demonstrated their ability to captivate crowds with both musical skill and engaging stage presence.
That energy translates directly into their live shows, where improvisation and interaction take center stage. Rather than simply recreating studio recordings, Magoo leans into the spontaneity of performance, allowing songs to evolve in real time and creating a unique experience for every audience. It is that blend of tradition, innovation, and connection that continues to define the band’s identity.
Sunday’s performance takes place at the Folsom Hotel Saloon, one of the region’s most iconic live music venues. Established in 1885, the historic Folsom Hotel sits in the heart of the Folsom Historic District and has long served as a hub for live entertainment, pairing Old West character with a vibrant modern music scene. Its intimate setting provides an ideal backdrop for Magoo’s intricate musicianship and dynamic stage presence.
The weekend surrounding the performance also highlights the venue’s continued ability to draw nationally recognized talent, with Paul Cauthen scheduled for special piano shows on Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21. Both performances are already sold out, underscoring the strong demand for live music in Historic Folsom.
