A potentially dangerous discovery inside an Orangevale home prompted a response from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal team over the weekend after military-style explosives and grenades were found inside the residence.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were contacted around 9 a.m. Saturday after a resident discovered suspected explosive materials inside a home on the 6700 block of Beech Avenue. Authorities said the home had previously belonged to the caller’s late father, who had served as a military demolitions instructor.
Sheriff’s officials said EOD personnel responded to the scene and located approximately two and a half blocks of C4 explosive material, along with two incendiary grenades and a smoke grenade. The items were safely secured and removed from the home for proper disposal.
Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the discovery, noting that an accidental detonation involving the recovered C4 could have caused catastrophic damage within roughly a 150-foot radius. Officials also said dangerous debris and fragmentation from an explosion could have traveled as far as 600 feet.
“To put the power of the recovered C4 into perspective, an accidental detonation could have caused catastrophic damage within approximately 150 feet, while dangerous fragmentation and debris could have traveled up to 600 feet,” the Sheriff’s Office shared.
No injuries were reported during the incident, and officials said the explosives were safely collected without further danger to nearby residents.
The Sheriff’s Office reminded the public that anyone who encounters suspected military ordnance, explosives or suspicious devices should never attempt to touch, move or inspect the items. Instead, authorities advise immediately leaving the area and calling 911 so trained personnel can safely respond.
