Hands-on exploration and real-world connections give students a look ahead at education and career opportunities
Students at Mills Middle School got a powerful glimpse into their futures last week as the campus came alive with exploration, inspiration and real-world connections during its dynamic College & Career Spirit Week.
Eighth graders kicked off the week with classroom presentations led by the school’s counseling team, introducing students to tools such as CaliforniaColleges.edu and guiding them through career exploration lessons aimed at helping them begin mapping out their futures. The sessions provided an early foundation for students to think critically about their interests, goals and potential pathways beyond middle school.
Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to hear from and engage with professionals representing a wide range of industries at the Rancho Cordova campus. Participating partners included Explore Rancho CA, Rancho Cordova Police Department, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, a Chick-fil-A franchise owner and community leaders in workforce development and industry. Their presence brought real-world perspective into the classroom, offering students valuable insight into careers in public safety, business and community service.

Higher education and technical training opportunities were also prominently featured. Representatives from Stanislaus State, Chamberlain University and Universal Technical Institute met with students to discuss degree programs, certifications and career pathways. The U.S. Army also visited campus, providing information about career opportunities and the educational benefits available through military service.
Beyond guest speakers and presentations, students explored a curated library collection of career-focused books while teachers contributed to the week’s theme with college-inspired classroom door displays. The visual elements across campus helped spark conversations about higher education and future ambitions, reinforcing the importance of planning ahead.
School officials expressed appreciation to the many partners, staff members and community contributors who helped bring the week to life, noting that their involvement plays a critical role in helping students envision and prepare for future success.
