Deputy was driving unmarked county vehicle while off duty; no injuries reported in multi-vehicle collision

An off-duty deputy with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a multi-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon in Rancho Cordova, authorities said.

According to the sheriff’s office, the crash occurred May 12 at approximately 4:15 p.m. near the intersection of Douglas Road and Sunrise Boulevard.

Officials said the deputy was driving an unmarked county vehicle at the time of the collision but was not on duty, in uniform, or working in any official capacity. Several vehicles were reportedly involved in the crash, though no injuries were reported.

The deputy, who was wearing street clothes at the time, was arrested by the Rancho Cordova Police Department on suspicion of DUI, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Edward Igoe.

The deputy was later released following the arrest and has since been placed on administrative leave pending both criminal and internal investigations.

In a statement released following the incident, the sheriff’s office said it is treating the matter seriously.

“We take this matter very seriously and extend our sincere apologies to the community,” the statement said. “This conduct does not reflect the values or standards of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.”

No additional details regarding the crash or the deputy’s identity were immediately released Wednesday.
