From a visual standpoint, the 2026 GMC Hummer EV is a statuesque SUV. It’s wide with a boxy shape, an illuminated front grille, and perhaps best of all, it features a removable Infinity Roof.
Yet there are multiple reasons to steer away from buying the Hummer EV and the electric pickup version. Sales have slumped for the two vehicles in the first half of 2026 (3,061) due in part to a pullback following federal tax credit leasing adjustments.
The combined sales numbers for the large luxury SUV and pickup have cooled from last year’s 17,279, the highest total in the vehicles’ three-year history. GMC is reportedly questioning whether to continue the Hummer EV, although there are currently plans for a 2027 model.
Complaints on the SUV range from high price tags (starting around $97,000) massive weight, major depreciation, heavy battery and overall weight, and difficulty getting into regular parking spaces. Also, the eight-year, 100,000 battery is a good one. However, if one needs replacing the estimated cost can be $30,000 to $50,000.
Despite the negative aspects, the Hummer electric SUV also owns its share of positive traits. One of the major ones is range. It travels a long way – roughly 310 miles – before a charge is required. Using a DC fast-charger, the 170-kWh battery can add up to 100 miles of range in 10 to 12 minutes and go from 10% to 80% in about 40 to 54 minutes.
A glance at the aggressive looking SUV and one assumes it has some serious offroad chops. It does, starting with the air suspension that can create more than 16 inches of ground clearance. It has standard four-wheel drive, 22-inch tires, provides instant electric torque delivery, and has crab-walking maneuverability modes.
For serious offroad enthusiasts, there’s also an Extreme Off-Road Package that costs nearly $10,000.
Another major attribute of the Hummer EV is its incredibly quick for such a big vehicle that weighs between 8,660 to 9,000 pounds. Both the standard Hummer 2X and the 3X have explosive power and get approximately 53 MPGe.
The 2X model comes with dual electric motors (one at each axle) and has a combined output of 570 horsepower and 7,400 pound-feet of torque. It goes 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
While the Hummer 2X is fast, the 3X is even quicker, going a remarkably swift 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. The 3X adds a third electric motor (one at the front axle, two at the rear) and delivers 830 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque.
For a huge vehicle, the Hummer EV never feels bulky like many large SUVs. It moves with smooth fluidity and handles well, two qualities one doesn’t expect due to its size. Beware though, it’s best not to take tight turns too sharply and the Hummer can be a problem when maneuvering in most parking lots.

Standard driver safety features include forward collision warning; hands free driving; automatic lane changing; intersection emergency braking; front pedestrian and bicycle detection; rear cross traffic alert; lane departure warning; blind spot steering; driver attention assist; lane keep assist; automatic high beams; adaptive cruise control; and electronic stability control system.
AT A GLANCE: 2026 GMC HUMMER ELECTRIC SUV

The interior is spacious, but there is no third row, so it only seats five people. Front row seats are comfortable and there’s plenty of adjustments for finding that just-right position for driver and passenger. The back row offers good head and leg room. The tri-zone climate control allows back seat occupants to control their own environment.
The Infinity Roof has four removable panels that can be stored in the trunk. There’s 35.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row that increases to 81.8 cubes with the seats folded down. A front trunk provides an additional 11.3 cubic feet of space.
There’s lots to admire regarding the luxury 2026 GMC Hummer electric SUV. But the popularity of EVs is starting to dwindle and one wonders what the future might hold for this large vehicle with the rugged good looks.
