There are multiple reasons to purchase the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid. However, one of those details is not what many folks might initially think – fuel economy.
There are multiple subcompact hybrid SUVs that get better gas mileage than the Crosstrek. While an average of 36 mpg is a good figure, several competitors will provide more savings at the pumps.
The Kia Niro hybrid gets an exceptional 53 mpg, the Lexus UX 300h reaches 44 mpg, and the Toyota Corolla Cross delivers 42 mpg. Two highly regarded compact hybrid SUVs – Honda CR-V (40 mpg) and Toyota RAV4 (39 mpg) – also outdo the Crosstrek.
But none of the aforementioned hybrid SUVs can match the versatility of the Crosstrek. It provides mild offroad excursions while equally suited for daily around-town commuting. It also delivers solid performance, a smooth ride, has a moonroof, and best of all – is equipped with standard all-wheel drive.
Since being introduced 14 years ago, the Crosstrek has enjoyed very strong sales. It has sales of 110,000 or more the past nine years, including an all-time high of 191,724 in 2025.
The Crosstrek exterior makeup is part hatchback, part SUV, and fits the need for a certain clientele who favor a small, versatile vehicle. The SUV has an 8.7-inch ground clearance and its hill descent control allows it to travel over steep grades, loose dirt surfaces, rocky forest roads, and serve as a dependable vehicle in snow.
What we also enjoy regarding the Crosstrek hybrid is performance. In the past, that’s been the biggest criticism here regarding all Subaru vehicles – underpowered engines. But the Crosstrek hybrid breaks that mold with a new powertrain that departs its pokey past.
The Crosstrek has a peppy engine that offers much-needed fun. It features two electric motors that combine with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder to produce 194 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. It goes 0-60 mph in 7.6 seconds, a second faster than the gas-powered Crosstrek.
Although there is some noticeable engine noise, the Crosstrek rides smoothly for a small SUV. It handles well and is easy to navigate in tight spaces. Standard driver safety features include pre-collision braking; lane centering and lane keep assist; automatic emergency steering; pre-collision throttle management; and adaptive cruise control.

The interior features upgraded upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. It has a 12.3-inch gauge cluster and an 11.6-inch vertical infotainment screen that is large with bright colors and huge icons, making it easy to read the simplistic menu.
Up front, both seats are heated. The driver’s seat is fully powered, comfortable and roomy, but the passenger seat requires manual adjustments. The second row provides adequate head and leg room. The cargo area measures 18.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row and expands to a maximum capacity of 50.6 cubes.
Even though it can’t match several other competitors in fuel economy, the 2026 Crosstrek hybrid has enough strong overall qualities to give car shoppers a reason to buy this well-equipped subcompact SUV.
