More than 20 units from Metro, Folsom Fire Departments battle blaze
An Orangevale homeowner escaped without injury after an early morning fire Thursday caused extensive damage to her longtime property, destroying much of her home, several vehicles and multiple outbuildings.
The fire was reported at 2:55 a.m. in the 9100 block of Cherry Avenue, prompting a large response from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. More than 20 fire units responded to the incident, including seven engines, a truck company, a medic unit and other support resources. Firefighters from the Folsom Fire Department also responded to assist.
When crews arrived, they found a large, fast-moving fire heavily involving a two-story home while flames had already spread to multiple outbuildings, a chicken coop, two vehicles, an RV and surrounding vegetation. Additional resources were requested as firefighters mounted an aggressive attack to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to neighboring properties.
According to Metro Fire, the homeowner, who has lived on the property for more than 60 years, was awakened after smelling smoke inside the residence. She went outside to investigate and discovered flames burning near the home. She grabbed her phone, safely evacuated and called 911.
Firefighters were able to stop the blaze from spreading beyond the property, but the residence sustained extensive damage and most of its contents were destroyed. Several outbuildings, vehicles and other personal property were also lost in the fire, leaving the longtime homeowner with devastating property losses.
No injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross responded to assist the homeowner with temporary lodging, clothing and other immediate needs following the fire.
Metro Fire reminds residents that anyone who discovers a fire in or around their home should evacuate immediately, move to a safe location and call 911 as quickly as possible. Officials said early notification gives firefighters the best opportunity to save lives while limiting damage to homes and property.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
