Prairie City Road is fully open again between U.S. Highway 50 and White Rock Road following completion of a pavement repair project that brought weekday closures to the heavily traveled corridor. While the recent work addresses some of the roadway’s most immediate problems, city officials say the repairs are an interim fix and that much larger improvements remain in the long-range plans.
The City of Folsom announced the reopening after crews completed repaving and critical pavement repairs along sections of Prairie City Road.
The project was completed through a partnership between the City of Folsom Public Works Department and Sacramento County Department of Transportation.
Work began Aug. 24 and required Prairie City Road to be closed between White Rock Road and Alder Creek from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The roadway reopened each evening and remained open on weekends while construction was underway.
As part of the project, crews removed and replaced approximately 4 inches of pavement in sections of Prairie City Road where repairs were needed in the most deteriorated areas.
When news of the planned closure was first reported by Folsom Times more than a week ago, it generated considerable discussion among area residents on the news site’s social media pages. Some expressed gratitude that deteriorating sections of Prairie City Road were finally being addressed, while others questioned the timing of the work and why the project was limited to repairing sections of the roadway rather than repaving, widening and leveling the entire corridor.
Folsom City Councilmember Barbara Leary responded to several of those concerns, explaining that the recently completed project was intended to address immediate roadway conditions while a much larger and more complicated improvement effort continues to be developed.
“The full replacement is complex and requires coordination with the County as the lane on the west, heading south from 50, is in the county,” Leary said in response to residents. “The process is complex due to funding issues that are being addressed and, unfortunately take a significant amount of time.”
The jurisdictional split between Folsom and Sacramento County adds another layer to improvements along the corridor. Larger-scale work beyond the recently completed pavement repairs requires coordination between the two agencies as plans and funding are developed.
Leary said improving Prairie City Road has been among her priorities since joining the City Council and credited city staff with moving the recent repair project forward.
“This project has been at the top of my list of priorities since I was elected. A big shout out and THANK YOU to City Public Works Staff and City Manager Whitemyer for pushing this up on the list of street projects,” Leary said. “I know that many residents, particularly those in the southwest portion of S-50, will be relieved once this work is completed as this corridor is essential for travel to the interchange of Prairie City Road and Highway 50.”
The corridor has become increasingly important as development continues south of Highway 50. Prairie City Road provides a direct connection between White Rock Road, communities south of the freeway and the Prairie City Road interchange with Highway 50.
While the newly completed repairs address the most deteriorated areas, they should not be confused with a complete reconstruction of Prairie City Road. Leary said a longer-term effort involving both Folsom and Sacramento County is being developed to make more substantial improvements, including widening the roadway.
“There is a longer range plan being formed with the County and the City to make greater improvements and widen the road,” Leary said. “However, at this time it is critical to make it safer in the meantime. It’s a joint project between the City and County that has been way too long in the pipeline.”
That larger project will require additional planning, coordination and funding before it can move forward. No construction schedule for those longer-term improvements has been announced.
For motorists who have navigated the daytime detours over the past week, however, the immediate disruption is over. With the pavement work complete, Prairie City Road is once again fully open between Highway 50 and White Rock Road.
