Independence Day week is almost here, bringing with it a full calendar of rodeos, fireworks, patriotic parades, concerts and community celebrations across the Sacramento region. Whether you’re looking to stay close to home or venture out for a short drive, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate America’s birthday with family-friendly fun.
From Historic Folsom’s beloved Hometown Parade and Rare Cattle Drive to the Folsom Pro Rodeo’s nightly fireworks spectacular, the local area once again serves as one of Northern California’s premier destinations for Fourth of July festivities. Beyond Folsom, neighboring communities including El Dorado Hills, Placerville, Rancho Cordova, Davis, Elk Grove, Roseville and South Lake Tahoe are preparing for celebrations of their own, offering everything from carnival rides and concerts to parades, drone shows and dazzling fireworks displays.
Here’s a look at some of the biggest Independence Day celebrations taking place throughout the region.
Historic Folsom kicks off the celebration July 1
The holiday festivities begin in Historic Folsom on Wednesday, July 1, with the return of the annual Hometown Parade and Rare Cattle Drive.
The patriotic parade steps off at 7 p.m. along Sutter Street, featuring decorated floats, community organizations, marching groups, classic vehicles, local performers and plenty of hometown pride. Following the parade, approximately 50 head of cattle, including Texas Longhorns, will make their way down Historic Sutter Street in the community’s popular Rare Cattle Drive, a unique tradition that celebrates Folsom’s western heritage and draws thousands of spectators each year.
This year’s celebration also recognizes several significant milestones, including America’s 250th anniversary, the City of Folsom’s 80th anniversary and the 65th anniversary of the Folsom Pro Rodeo.
Folsom Pro Rodeo returns July 2-4
The celebration continues July 2 through July 4 as one of Northern California’s signature Independence Day traditions returns to the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena.
Now celebrating its 65th anniversary, the Folsom Pro Rodeo once again features three nights of professional rodeo action, including bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and team roping.
Each evening also includes crowd favorites such as mutton busting, specialty entertainment and a patriotic opening ceremony before concluding with one of the region’s largest fireworks displays lighting up the Folsom sky.
Thousands of visitors attend the annual event each summer, making it one of the area’s most anticipated Fourth of July traditions.
Fireworks and Freedom returns to El Dorado Hills
Just minutes from Folsom, El Dorado Hills Town Center hosts its annual Fireworks and Freedom celebration on Friday, July 3.
The family-friendly evening features live music by Hip Service, food vendors, children’s activities and entertainment throughout the Town Center before the annual fireworks spectacular caps off the evening.
The celebration has become one of the region’s most popular pre-Fourth of July traditions, drawing families from throughout El Dorado County and the Sacramento region.
Placerville’s Family Blast lights up the Foothills
Just a short drive east of Folsom, the annual Fourth of July Family Blast returns to the El Dorado County Fair & Event Center in Placerville on Saturday, July 4, offering an evening filled with live music, family activities and fireworks.
Gates open at 3 p.m., allowing families plenty of time to enjoy food vendors, free bounce houses for children and activities before live music begins at 6 p.m. Country band Locked N’ Loaded will provide the evening’s entertainment leading up to the fireworks finale.
One of the event’s unique traditions is its partnership with the Placerville Speedway’s annual Freedom & Fireworks race program. Once the night’s racing concludes, typically around 9:30 p.m., a fireworks spectacular lights up the sky above the fairgrounds.
Admission is $5 per person for walk-in guests, while carload admission is available for $30 and includes parking for up to six people. Parking in the tiered lots is available for $10 per vehicle. Lawn chairs are welcome, although pop-up canopies must be taken down before the fireworks begin. Outside alcohol, pets and open flames are not permitted.
Rancho Cordova celebrates for two days
Rancho Cordova once again hosts one of the Sacramento area’s largest Independence Day celebrations with its annual Fourth of July Festival on July 3 and 4 at Hagan Community Park.
The two-day celebration includes carnival rides, food vendors, community exhibits, circus performers, family activities and live entertainment throughout both days. Fireworks light up the sky each evening, while July 4 also features the community’s annual parade and the popular All-America Mile, creating a full day of patriotic festivities for visitors of all ages.
Davis hosts annual Fourth of July celebration
Families looking for another nearby option can head to Davis on Saturday, July 4, where Community Park once again becomes the center of the city’s Independence Day celebration.
The free event features live entertainment, food vendors, children’s activities, community booths and family-friendly entertainment before ending with a fireworks display after dark.
Elk Grove adds drones to the celebration
Elk Grove’s annual Salute to the Red, White and Blue celebration returns July 4 to Elk Grove Regional Park.
Visitors can enjoy food trucks, vendors, live entertainment and family activities before the evening concludes with a fireworks spectacular enhanced by a synchronized 200-drone light show, combining modern technology with one of the region’s favorite Independence Day traditions.
Roseville offers a full day of patriotic fun
Roseville celebrates Independence Day with activities stretching from morning through evening.
The day begins with the community’s annual Fourth of July parade before family festivities continue at Royer Park with entertainment, food and activities. Later in the afternoon, gates open at @the Grounds, where thousands gather for one of Placer County’s largest fireworks spectaculars.
Baseball and fireworks at Sutter Health Park
Baseball fans can celebrate Independence Day by catching the Athletics in action on Saturday, July 4, at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.
Following the game, fans will be treated to a postgame fireworks show over the ballpark, continuing a longtime holiday tradition that combines America’s pastime with Independence Day festivities.
Lake Tahoe lights up the sky
For those planning a mountain getaway, South Lake Tahoe’s annual Lights on the Lake fireworks show remains one of the nation’s premier Independence Day displays.
The nationally recognized show begins at approximately 9:45 p.m. over Lake Tahoe and is visible from numerous shoreline viewing areas around the lake.
Fireworks are also returning to Tahoe City this year, where “The Boom is Back” celebration features live entertainment throughout the day before fireworks launch over Commons Beach in the evening, giving visitors another memorable Sierra celebration to enjoy.
With celebrations taking place throughout the Sacramento region and Sierra Foothills, families have no shortage of opportunities to enjoy fireworks, patriotic traditions and community events during Independence Day week.
