Funding will support growth of Countywide SacRT Flex program, improving mobility for seniors and residents with disabilities through 2029
The Sacramento Regional Transit District has secured a $3.76 million funding award from the California Public Utilities Commission to continue and expand its on-demand wheelchair-accessible transportation service, marking a significant investment in mobility access across Sacramento County.
The funding, awarded through the CPUC’s Access for All program, will allow SacRT to build upon its existing SacRT Flex Microtransit pilot program, a shared-ride neighborhood service designed to provide on-demand transportation for seniors, low-income residents and individuals with disabilities. The program has focused on improving access to wheelchair-accessible vehicles throughout the region.
According to SacRT, the Flex program received the highest evaluation score in the competitive funding process, based on its ability to improve mobility, reduce wait times and expand equitable access to transportation. The agency also serves as the designated Local Access Fund Administrator for Sacramento County, overseeing distribution of funds and ensuring compliance with CPUC program guidelines.
Pending approval by the SacRT Board of Directors on May 11, the agency plans to continue operating the service in partnership with Nomad Transit, LLC, a subsidiary of Via Transportation. The three-year funding award will support operations from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029.
SacRT officials said the funding will allow the agency to sustain and grow the Flex program beyond its pilot phase while increasing the number of wheelchair-accessible vehicles in service. The expansion is also expected to reduce wait times for riders and explore the addition of weekend service hours, while continuing to provide curb-to-curb, on-demand transportation.
“Ensuring equitable access to transportation is central to SacRT’s mission,” SacRT General Manager and CEO Henry Li said in a statement. “This funding allows us to expand an already successful pilot and better serve community members who rely on wheelchair-accessible transportation for daily mobility and independence.”
The Access for All program was created to increase the availability of on-demand transportation services for people with disabilities, including those requiring wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Under the program structure, transit agencies like SacRT may serve both as administrators of local funding and as service providers, provided they meet state guidelines and demonstrate measurable community benefit.
As part of its ongoing role, SacRT will continue to manage the application and funding process for service providers, monitor program performance through regular reporting and collaborate with local stakeholders. That includes ongoing engagement with the Mobility Advisory Council and other disability advocacy groups to refine and improve service delivery.
Transit officials said the continued expansion of SacRT Flex is intended to strengthen regional transportation equity by increasing independence and accessibility for riders who rely on specialized mobility options, while building a more responsive and inclusive transit network across Sacramento County.
