GRANITE BAY — A small earthquake was recorded near Granite Bay on Tuesday evening, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey.
The magnitude 2.8 quake struck at approximately 6:35 p.m., with an epicenter about 2 miles west-southwest of Granite Bay. Initial reports indicate the quake occurred at a depth of roughly 2.6 miles beneath the surface.
Weak shaking was reported in the surrounding area, based on early community intensity reports. No injuries or damage have been reported.
Earthquakes of this size are generally considered minor and are often felt by some people but rarely cause damage. Small seismic events like this are relatively common across Northern California, where fault systems remain active.
The USGS noted the event is based on preliminary data and could be revised as additional information becomes available.
Residents who felt the quake can report their experience through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” system as part of ongoing data collection.
