FBI Band, The Nipper Brothers, All Good Vibes and Tom Rigney headline three days of live entertainment
From the timeless sounds of Motown and classic soul to Grateful Dead favorites, high-energy dance music and Bay Area roots blues, another diverse weekend of live entertainment is on tap at Historic Folsom’s Powerhouse Pub.
This week’s lineup features the FBI Band opening the weekend Friday evening before the nightclub transforms into a tropical-themed DJ party later that night. Saturday brings an afternoon Grateful Dead tribute by The Nipper Brothers followed by Sacramento favorite All Good Vibes, while acclaimed violinist Tom Rigney closes the weekend Sunday during the latest installment of the venue’s popular Powerhouse of Blues series.
Friday, July 31 gets underway with the TGIF Early Show as the FBI Band takes the stage at 6:30 p.m.
Built around the unforgettable sounds of Motown, soul and classic R&B, the FBI Band delivers a nostalgic concert experience celebrating some of the greatest artists and songs ever recorded. The group’s performances have often been described as “like spending time with old friends,” thanks to a setlist filled with timeless favorites that generations of music lovers instantly recognize.
Audiences can expect to hear classics made famous by Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, The Supremes, The Temptations, The Staple Singers, The Marvelettes, Sly & The Family Stone and many more. Blending smooth harmonies, infectious rhythms and feel-good energy, the band creates an atmosphere where dancing and singing along become part of the experience.
Later Friday evening, Powerhouse shifts into nightclub mode with its Bikinis & Boards summer party beginning at 10 p.m.
Featuring three DJs spinning throughout the night, five full bars and Big Rob’s Cigar & Hookah Cabana, the tropical-themed event encourages guests to embrace the summer spirit with beachwear ranging from Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops to board shorts and tropical attire. The massive LED dance floor and summer-inspired atmosphere promise one of the venue’s biggest themed nightlife events of the season.
Saturday, Aug. 1 begins with the Saturday Afternoon Dance Party featuring The Nipper Brothers at 3 p.m.
One of Northern California’s premier Grateful Dead tribute bands, The Nipper Brothers celebrate the music and spirit of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead with performances that focus on recreating not only the band’s legendary sound, but also the communal experience that made every Grateful Dead concert unique.
Brothers Joe and Scott Nipper lead the band alongside Tim Ajeet Campbell, Rohn Kramer, David Welsh and Michael Mares, paying close attention to the vocal harmonies, iconic melodies and poetic lyrics written by Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow. Rather than simply covering the music, the group strives to capture the improvisational energy and connection between performers and audience that helped define the Grateful Dead legacy.
Saturday night belongs to Sacramento-based All Good Vibes, which takes over the Powerhouse stage at 10 p.m.
Known for keeping dance floors moving, All Good Vibes has built a reputation throughout the Sacramento region by delivering crowd-pleasing performances spanning R&B, funk, pop, rock, modern country and 1980s favorites. The band’s broad musical catalog allows it to seamlessly transition from nostalgic classics to current hits while maintaining the high-energy atmosphere that has become its trademark.
Fronted by vocalists Andrew Wosnum and Amanda Beltz, the band also features bassist Dustin Davis, drummer Dakota Pattison and guitarist Russell Brewer. Together, the five musicians combine powerful vocals, tight grooves and polished musicianship into a lively show designed to keep audiences dancing throughout the night.
The weekend concludes Sunday, Aug. 2, as the Powerhouse of Blues series welcomes acclaimed violinist, composer and bandleader Tom Rigney beginning at 3 p.m.
For nearly 50 years, Rigney has been one of the Bay Area’s most respected roots musicians, blending Cajun, zydeco, blues, Americana, Celtic influences and New Orleans rhythms into a style all his own. His fiery violin playing has become the centerpiece of performances that are as emotionally moving as they are danceable.
The son of legendary baseball manager Bill Rigney, Tom Rigney earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Harvard before pursuing music full time. He first gained recognition with the award-winning Bay Area group Back in the Saddle before touring internationally with Queen Ida’s Bon Temps Zydeco Band, where he developed a lifelong passion for Cajun and zydeco music.
Rigney later spent 15 years leading the acclaimed roots band The Sundogs before launching Tom Rigney and Flambeau in 2000. Since then, the group has earned widespread acclaim for its unique blend of Louisiana rhythms, blues, rock, swing and world music influences. Albums including Happy to Be Here, Metamorphosis, A Blue Thing, Back Porch Blues, Cajun Fandango and Let the Four Winds Blow have showcased the band’s versatility while establishing Rigney as one of the country’s premier roots musicians.
Backed by an accomplished group of seasoned performers, Flambeau’s live shows are celebrated for their musical intensity, spirited improvisation and irresistible rhythms that regularly have audiences dancing from the first song to the final encore.
