Week five of Twilight Concert Series features acclaimed Northern California band celebrating one of rock’s most sophisticated catalogs
FOLSOM — The music of one of rock’s most influential and musically sophisticated bands takes center stage Thursday night as Historic Folsom’s Twilight Concert Series welcomes Steelin’ Dan to the Zittel Family Amphitheater.
Known throughout Northern California as one of the region’s premier tribute acts, Steelin’ Dan has spent more than two decades faithfully recreating the timeless music of Steely Dan, earning widespread recognition for its precision musicianship and authentic performances. The award-winning group brings the legendary catalog of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker to life with the intricate arrangements, lush harmonies and jazz-infused rock sound that made Steely Dan one of the most celebrated bands of the 1970s and beyond.
Presented by Bernau Development Corporation in partnership with the Folsom Historic District Association, the Twilight Concert Series continues its 13-week summer run with free Thursday evening concerts through Aug. 27. The weekly series has once again drawn large crowds to Historic Folsom, where residents and visitors gather to enjoy live music, local restaurants, shopping and one of the community’s favorite summer traditions.
For longtime Steely Dan fans, Thursday’s performance offers an opportunity to experience many of the band’s most recognizable songs performed live by musicians who have built their reputation on musical accuracy. Audiences can expect favorites including “Reelin’ In the Years,” “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” “Do It Again,” “Peg,” “Hey Nineteen,” “Josie,” “Black Cow,” “FM,” “Deacon Blues,” “Dirty Work” and many more from Steely Dan’s legendary catalog.
Steelin’ Dan has become one of the Sacramento region’s most decorated tribute bands. The group captured Sacramento Area Music Awards (SAMMIE) honors as Best Tribute Band for four consecutive years after previously earning the award for Best Cover Band. The band was later inducted into the SAMMIES Hall of Fame, recognizing its longstanding contribution to the region’s live music scene. Sacramento Magazine has also honored the group with its Best of Sacramento Award, praising the band’s remarkable attention to detail and musicianship.
Critics and fans alike have praised the band’s commitment to faithfully reproducing the sound of Steely Dan’s recordings. Sacramento Magazine described Steelin’ Dan’s arrangements as so accurate that “even the most discriminating Dan fans will be hard-pressed to find flaws,” while Capital Public Radio host Beth Ruyak noted, “We are so fortunate in Sacramento. The band Steelin’ Dan has nailed it.”
That attention to musical detail comes from an accomplished lineup of professional musicians, educators and recording artists whose experience spans jazz, rock, classical and contemporary music. Collectively, the band brings decades of performance experience to the stage while capturing the sophisticated harmonies, complex rhythms and polished arrangements that have made Steely Dan’s music endure for generations.
Over the years, Steelin’ Dan has performed at venues and festivals throughout California and Northern Nevada, including the Harris Center in Folsom, Yoshi’s in Oakland, Sweetwater Music Hall, the Crest Theatre, the Sofia Theatre, the Sacramento Jazz Festival, Crystal Bay Casino, Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and numerous summer concert series across the region. The band’s continued popularity has helped build a devoted following among music lovers who appreciate Steely Dan’s unique blend of rock, jazz, R&B and pop influences.
Thursday’s appearance continues another successful season for Historic Folsom’s Twilight Concert Series, which has featured performances by CCsegerR, Sugar High Band, Invisible Son and Wayward Buffalo during the opening weeks of the summer. Each Thursday evening, the Historic District comes alive as visitors gather for dinner, shopping and live entertainment before the music begins at the Zittel Family Amphitheater.
Following Steelin’ Dan’s performance, the Twilight Concert Series continues July 9 with the Lyric Michelle Band, followed by Hipper than Hip on July 16, AKAlive Band on July 23 and LVVS on July 30. August performances include Dunsbar Road, Wayside Band and Daze on the Green before the series concludes Aug. 27 with Adam Aldama & The Aces.

Thursday’s free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Zittel Family Amphitheater in Historic Folsom.
