ORANGEVALE — A deep dive into one of rock’s most inventive and unconventional catalogs is set to unfold this Friday night as Stinkfoot Orchestra, a powerhouse tribute to the music of Frank Zappa, takes the stage at The Boardwalk for a high-energy performance that promises both precision and pure musical chaos in the best possible way.
Presented by The Boardwalk and Dana Moret, the May 1 show will feature a special appearance by Napoleon Murphy Brock, a legendary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who performed alongside Zappa during the 1970s and contributed to iconic albums includingApostrophe (’)andRoxy & Elsewhere. His presence alone brings an authentic connection to the original Zappa era, elevating the performance beyond tribute into something closer to a living extension of the music itself.
Formed in 2022, Stinkfoot Orchestra has quickly established itself as one of the premier Zappa tribute ensembles on the West Coast. Known for its ambitious arrangements and meticulous attention to detail, the group features an expansive lineup that includes six horns, tuned percussion, four vocalists and a roster of seasoned musicians capable of navigating Zappa’s famously complex compositions.
Their performances span more than three decades of material, reaching back to the early days of the Mothers of Invention and carrying through to Zappa’s later, more intricate works of the 1980s. Along the way, audiences can expect a blend of progressive rock, jazz fusion and satirical storytelling, all delivered with a theatrical flair that mirrors Zappa’s original live shows.
What separates Stinkfoot Orchestra from many tribute acts is not just their technical ability, but their ability to capture the spirit of the music. The band has earned high praise from former Zappa collaborators, including Arthur Barrow, Ray White, Bruce Fowler, Ike Willis and Lisa Popeil. Fowler perhaps summed it up best with a simple but powerful endorsement: they get it.

That authenticity plays out on stage through both sound and spectacle. From the intricate layering of songs like “Inca Roads” to the biting satire of “Montana” and the driving groove of “I’m the Slime,” the ensemble delivers a performance that balances precision with spontaneity, humor with musicianship and nostalgia with fresh energy.
The result is a show that resonates with longtime fans while also introducing a new generation to Zappa’s genre-defying catalog. It’s a rare opportunity to experience music that challenges conventions, pushes boundaries and refuses to sit neatly in any one category.
Friday’s performance begins at 8 p.m. at The Boardwalk, located at 9426 Greenback Lane in Orangevale. The show is open to all ages with a responsible adult for those under 21, and all ticket sales are final. For tickets and additional show information, visitwww.rocktheboardwalk.com.
