Three people were transported to area hospitals Sunday following a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 50 near Prairie City Road that involved an overturned vehicle, a car fire and a small grass fire, according to emergency response reports.

Units from the Folsom Fire Department and the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District were dispatched to the scene near Highway 50 and Prairie City Road.

Upon arrival, crews located one vehicle, reported as a Lexus but the California Highway Patrol, overturned on its roof with an occupant trapped inside. A second vehicle, a Subaru involved in the crash and veered off the roadway and was on fire, and flames spread into nearby vegetation, igniting a grass fire along the highway shoulder.

Firefighters extricated the trapped occupant from the overturned vehicle and provided medical care. Crews also treated a 5 year old child who was reported unresponsive upon arrival.

All three individuals involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals. Authorities reported one person sustained critical injuries and two others sustained moderate injuries.

Fire personnel extinguished both the vehicle fire and the grass fire, preventing further spread along the roadside.

The incident impacted multiple lanes of Highway 50 for a period of time as crews worked to clear the scene.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. Witnesses stated that just before the the collision the driver of the Lexus was reportedly driving recklessly. At this time the California Highway Patrol is not releasing any details or if drugs or alcohol were a factor as the investigation remains ongoing.
