Alternative rock, psychedelic sounds and ’90s-inspired grunge share the stage Saturday in Orangevale
Three Sacramento-area bands with distinctly different approaches to rock music will share The Boardwalk stage Saturday night as Trading Fours headlines a lineup featuring The Jeffy Spaghetti Variety Show and Most Curious.
The all-ages concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, bringing together alternative rock, an unconventional blend of psychedelic sounds and a dose of raw ’90s-inspired grunge for a night showcasing original music from the Sacramento scene.
At the top of the bill is Trading Fours, a five-piece alternative rock band built around the blues-influenced vocals of lead singer Juan. The Sacramento group has developed a sound that draws from the individual musical interests of each member, creating songs that carry familiar rock influences without being confined to a single style.
That mixture translates into an energetic live performance, with the band describing its approach as both passionate and designed to make its music feel simultaneously classic and fresh.
Trading Fours’ alternative foundation provides the center point for a Saturday lineup that moves in decidedly different directions as the night unfolds.
The Jeffy Spaghetti Variety Show may have the evening’s most difficult sound to neatly categorize. The Sacramento band describes itself as a psychedelic doom jazz folk rock group — an unusual collision of genres that offers a considerably different flavor from a traditional rock bill.
Even the band’s own description embraces that unconventional personality, promising to provide “the needed sauce for the delicious audio dinners you have been craving.”
The result is a musical wildcard in Saturday’s lineup, with psychedelic textures and elements of doom, jazz, folk and rock all finding their way into a sound intentionally built to resist easy classification.
Most Curious brings another direction to the evening, reaching back to the loud-quiet dynamics and emotional intensity that helped define the grunge explosion of the 1990s.
Fuzzy guitars, heavy shifts in dynamics and an intentionally unfiltered approach are central to the band’s sound. Drawing inspiration from Nirvana and Alice in Chains, Most Curious taps into the weight and vulnerability of that era while working to create music that feels contemporary rather than simply recreating the past.
Together, the three acts give Saturday’s audience a broad sampling of Sacramento’s original rock scene. Trading Fours brings an energetic alternative-rock foundation, The Jeffy Spaghetti Variety Show ventures into more experimental territory and Most Curious adds the heavy guitars and emotional punch of grunge.
The concert continues a busy summer of live entertainment at The Boardwalk, which regularly mixes original local and regional artists with touring performers, tribute bands and specialty shows.
The longtime Orangevale music venue is located at 9426 Greenback Lane and has remained a familiar stop for Sacramento-area musicians and audiences across generations.
Trading Fours with The Jeffy Spaghetti Variety Show and Most Curious begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. The show is open to all ages, with a parent or guardian required for guests under 21. All ticket sales are final.
