SACRAMENTO COUNTY – A tragic overnight crash in southeastern Sacramento County claimed the lives of two teenage girls and left three others fighting for their lives after a vehicle slammed into a tree and erupted into flames early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The collision happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. along Scott Road near Latrobe Road in the rural Sloughhouse area, according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators believe the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash occurred.
CHP officials said the car was being driven by a 16-year-old girl, who died at the scene along with a 14-year-old front-seat passenger. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire, quickly becoming engulfed in flames.
Emergency crews were reportedly dispatched after an automatic crash detection alert from an iPhone notified authorities of the collision location.
Before firefighters and paramedics arrived, several motorists traveling through the area stopped and attempted to help those trapped inside the burning vehicle. CHP said the bystanders were able to rescue the three passengers riding in the back seat before the fire intensified.
The surviving victims — two 16-year-old girls and one 15-year-old girl — suffered major injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Authorities said one victim was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, another to Mercy San Juan Medical Center, and the third to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento.
Fire personnel treated the injured victims at the scene before they were transported by ambulance.
Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision. The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
